Stock grill peeling away...

Stock grill peeling away...

Postby KRNguyW/aSOLARA » Sat Apr 23, 2005 3:39 pm

I have a RED '99 solara that i just got, exterior-wise everything is immaculate EXCEPT for the grill (stock) the chrome is beginning to peel away. I've seen a lot of solaras on solaraguy w/ the chrome stipped away from the grill, but i've only seen it done on silver and black solaras. Think it'll look nice on a red one? Or should i just buy a completely chrome one off of ebay? (also, how would i stip the chrome?? paint thinner?) Thanks in advance.

~Sorry for the newbiness...

if you type in 'toyota solara' into an ebay search, i believe there is still a OEM grill for sale.

If you decide to mod your current one, use a fine sandpaper and roughin' up the surface that has the chrome on it. Then paint and clear coat it. You dont need to get all the chrome color off rather just the clear coat and top layer of chrome.....jus enough for paint to stick.

I'm not sure about that stuff. is that whats on the car now? i think its just chrome one sided tape crap. I could see that peeling off within a month.

anyway, heres a stock one on ebay if you want to mod it

of course you can use the one you have. i was confused by what you where asking.

Ya, your gonna need to paint it. after you get the chrome off its anything but a finished look. Sand away the chrome, and prime, paint, clear coat it. Like the grill above. that looks clean

Not sure about the price of paint, but do a search for the mesh grill. Others have posted pics and what not on the subject.

if you want to make it easier on yourself, if the chrome is already chippin away. take 3 or 4 bucks and go to the car wash and hold the powerwasher like maybe 6 inches away from the grille and the chrome comes right off. then all you have to do is rough it up with some sandpaper and prime and paint. worked great for me 8)

It wont mess up my paint to do that, the powerwash? I've also read that i can jsut take off the grill and use break fluid or something? true? Also, are the emblems easily replaced (if i take it off can i jsut stick it back on)? I wanna try and see how its looks with the blacked out emblem and chrome emblem. and I SHOULD be able to paint and what not by myself right? cuz honestly, i have NO experience in doing something like this. Just getting started and all... thanks for the replies.

You could do it the ghetto way by buying these chrome strips on eBay. They stick on the front of your grill and there cheap enough. If your tight for cash, then thats a good way to go...or maybe just a cheap way to go...

Go to www.automotivetouchup.com You can buy the factory color paint in a spray can and a can of clear coat. I just bought mine and plan to paint my grill the factory white when it comes in.
