ethanol???

Hey guys,
Quick question: Is ethanol (10%) an acceptable fuel for our solara's? I was told by my mechanic last year, when I burnt up a couple valves on the camry, that ethanol burrns hotter and is dangerous to use long-term in import engines. Just checking if anyone has had experience in this area and knows the answer, cause ethanol is quite a bit cheaper than regular unleaded here in Lincoln. Thanks.

p.s. I searched the site already and didn't have much luck finding answers. :D

i can tell you that it was not a great idea for my goped lol. i think it would have been ok though if i richened the oil ratio though. forgot.

compression dropped like a mofo.

edit: sry i cut the story short. i added a little bit to the fuel mixture (not calculated just went with a gut feeling, no more than 10%)... and i did not re-add 2-cycle oil. = melted p rings

ethanol is the wrong additive. That actually makes the engine run hotter because it GOES AGAINST combustion.

Acetone is the additive you need. You improve your gas milage between 10- (high case) 30%

You should use about 1 ounce of acetone for every 6 (safe, actually everything 5... but too much = melted plastic) gallons of gasoline.

So put like 3 ounces MAX... 2.5 to be safe =P

He is probably asking because Some gas stations say there gas has 10% ethanol on the pump.

Yeah, I meant the super unleaded blends (89+ octane) with 10% ethanol. Is this blend harmful to engine internals? I was told that it IS for imports. I have no intentions of putting acetone in my gas tank, too dangerous!

It is Methanol not ethanol. I hear they are bad for fuel injection cars so maybe you should do more research about it.

They've been thinking about bringing in ethanol to the greater Atlanta area b/c it's a cleaner burning additive for gasoline, which equals less emissions.

Big problem, ethanol bonds better w/ H20 than it does w/ gasoline! :-?

Fortunately lots of lawyers w/ the gas companies have been putting there foot down on bringing the project in.
All the other facilities near my work have spent millions of dollars upgrading their systems to handle the ethanol  . We still haven't gotten word if it's going through or not.
