Q: Do our cars depreciate badly?

Really, I think Solara does real well in depreciation compared to other Toyotas and other vehicles. One Toyota that has excellent resale is the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Supra (not the old ones).

I don't remember the numbers but Toyota does relatively well. I did the research and it was VERY very close to the Honda Accord in depreciation values which was top in this price range and below. I think it was like 18% the first year compared to higher rates for other cars. The best cars were BMW and Mercedes and Lexus didn't do too bad.

5k a year is very poor depreciation on a car that averages 25k new. Toyotas hold thier value pretty well. They do drop off (like all cars) after the first year or so, but it all evens out because they can go for 200k miles Gotta love toyota reliability

All cars seem to be depreciating much more than expected in the current market. Its definately a buyers market now

I think one of the reasons used cars depreciate quickly in today's market is that so many manufacturer's are offering really low or 0% financing on new cars. If people can get new cars for so cheap, there's not a whole lot of incentive to buy used. But I still bought used, because there's no way I could have gotten such a nice new car for $15.6k, even if my car did have 26k miles on it when I bought it.

A car is probably the woerst investment you'll ever make. My blue book dropped over 3k since I bought it last spring. Although I noticed that the mileage didn't seem to make much diffrence for blue book. It sure means a lot to me though. When I bought mine there was a 99 6 cyl with a stick for the same price as mine, but it had almost 60k mi, and mine had under 15, and was toyota certified so I could get the extended warranty.

All cars depreciate BADLY during the three phases in their lifespan:
1. Take it out of the dealership
2. When it passes its Mfg's warranty
3. When it passes 100K miles.

If you are reaching close to 36K within the first year (or close to it) then your exp'ing 1&2 depreciation.
With that said....I'm selling my 13 year old celica with 150K miles for $5500....(actually toyota tech wanted to buy it over the phone for 4100, but i wanted more..greedy). So you see toyota's do hold UP in value over their lifespan!

I sold my 90 celica st with 186k mi no radio and some body rust for 1600 last spring. I'm satisfied.

Mileage deduction is based on a mathmatical formula. There could be only $500 difference from 99 solara with 10k miles or 75k miles. Blue book is not completely accurate

You can always do what I did and buy it used. I got my 2001 Solara SE V6 5 speed (loaded w/every single possible option) for $17,000 with only 4,000 miles on it. The guy I bought it from lost $9000 for 4,000 miles and I paid for all my aftermarket with my savings. Has it depreciated any further? I could care less b/c Im not selling it. Out here in the east coast modified cars aren't as popular, possibly due to winter, possibly be due to the fact that no shop wants to touch it or has the right equipment to work on it (i.e. alignment machine where I don't scrape while going on, correct wheel balancer, or even a simple rack to lift my car with) but I've decided my next vehicle will be something like a 4Runner for winter and my Solara for better weather. I've learned that exotics (Ferrari's) are nice to look at, but dropping 5-10k every 30,000 miles on belts, seals, "liquids", etc isn't realistic. Sorry for rambling. Jon.

Yeah, what going to all be an OVERKILL is the new 3.3 v6! One reason I think i got my 5sfe so cheaply is because the 2.4 was introduced!
