Auto Transmission Shifting

I have a 2003 I-4 15,000 miles with auto tranny. Have any others noticed that from like 35-50mph the tranny is always fishing for gears? Its like it cant make up its mind what gear it should be in. It happens mostly when coasting.

Thats what happens to mine. By coasting I mean like when your slowing down from the freeway, no accelearating or using the gas. Just coasting or breaking.

Last night I was cruisin along at about 45 i came up behind a car and had to let off of the gas, as soon as I did that I could feel the tranny shift hard out of overdrive and into third, but only for like a few seconds then it was back into OD.

Its easy to tell what gear your in in an automatic, just count the shifts.

Hey SC v6 how much did that cost you to get your overdrive clutches fixed?? I can't imagine it would be as much as replacing the whole thing. I ain't got no warranty.

Its easy knowing what gear you are in a/t when accelerating. When coasting (like you pre-mentioned), how do you know which gear you are in? How do you count the shifts when coasting? Obvious answer to my question is to coast and start acceleration and see the rpm's and gauge what gear you are in...but your q was specific to coasting? How do you know what gear you are in? if your coasting and say coming to a stop light, does your car go thru gears and you feel jerks (then you got an obvious prob with your tranny)..cus mine rpm's just drop (while coasting) and they slowely come close to 1.5K rpms.

The advantage of the 5S power train, about 100+ years of RD and road work before they put it in our cars  . Too bad it was so outdated by the time we got it, but all the bugs were worked out :D.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

hey Jai I guess I dont really know exactly what gear I am in, but I know if I'm coasting at speed of about 40 and higher it should be in OD.

I can feel my car downshifting from OD through the gears untill I stop, although it is very subtle, but can tell by looking at the tach that it is downshifting.

I may just be over worried and used to driving a damn Buick forever. I'm sure the tranny is just different than most domestic cars I'm used to using.

My car does the same thing.. brought it to the dealer and they say its normal... I've had the tranny flushed twice and drian and refilled twice.. its still going to do the same thing.

Dont worry.. its normal for a a/t tranny to do that...

Thanks indi, thats kind of what I thought, but just never really sure.
I don't have warranty so I don't really want to take it to the dealer.

I did a manual swap myself.. I would just take it in and tell them its kind of surging when its shifting, and can't decide which gear to stay in... they will check it out
