How to flush tranny fluids

How to flush tranny fluids

Postby KRNguyW/aSOLARA » Mon May 09, 2005 2:35 pm

I was wondering how to flush the tranny on a 5-spd V6 1st Gen. The previous owner got a 30,60,90k mile service done but she didnt get the transmission flushed. I was also wondering what happens when you dont get the tranny flushed. does shifting become harder? Because sometimes the shifter gets kinda stuck going into first and i have to force it in. Well, i've searched a couple of times and couldnt find anything. Any help would be nice. Thanks.

I recently just had my shop flush mine (V6 stick), and I saw where they drained it, but I wasn't in the back when they poured the new fluid in, so I didn't see where that goes. They put in a Mobil 1 SE-90 (I think, something like that) synthetic fluid that they recommended since I am supercharged. I asked them how bad the fluid was since I was at 85,000 miles and never changed the fluid, and they said it wasn't that bad.

But with the new fluid, the feeling is slightly different; it doesn't seem to take as long for the car to warm up, but I still have that same problem that you have, shuving it into first....usually what i do when that happens is play with the stick in nuetral then back to first, that usually works.

I went to the Dealer to have the BG treatment done. This entailed the BG chemical flush and treatment (conditioner) driven by a vacumn pump hooked up to the tranny. You might want to look in your local area to see if its availale and to possibly get some literature on this service/ treatment. I tell you what, this is freed up some of the sticking.

Wish you the best of luck,

manual transmission flush is just a simple drain and refill, similar to engine oil change, you drain the fluid from the bottom plug, and then refill new fluid from another plug that is a little bit to higher toward front, just top off the fluid until it overflow.
gear oil for manual transmission last very long time and hardly need flush, sometime shop recommend u to change it probably they want to make more $.

Do this go under the car and on the drive side is something that looks like an oil pan but bigger and flatter. You will need a hex wrench for this because it is not a normal nut. You open it up after you have driven it for a bit or else the oil won't drain that well when it is cold. After all of the fluid has drained out, then you plug it back up and look in the engine bay. You will see a dip stick that is I believe orange or red near the ABS and battery. You pull that out and put a funnel in it and pour in the new oil. I don't know about manuals but I know automatics take about 2.5-3 quarts.

That is just your basic flush but if you do what SpeedSTARS is called a power flush. With that machine hooked up to your transmission will suck all of the fluid out. I believe the power flush is what your looking for because it has been awhile and you haven't changed your transmission fluid.

trouble geeting into first is most likely a safety mechanism due due to the car roling forwards or backwards... the principle is to keep you from blowing your engine.... some times it may kick in too soon

while on the subject reverse will lock up 2.25% and needs to be reset by going into first (clutch disingaged)

doesnt hapen if you make a habit of going into first then reverse

...5-speed manual shift transmissions are actually about 2 per cent of production........

..have not seen owners manual guidance on this....

..at 75k, the clutch/5-speed actually work quite smoothly; I'm not planning to dick with the status quo....

...again, they ain't many of us out there..........ez

Based on haynes you should change your tranny fluid for a manual every 30k. As for the gears getting hard to put in 1st gear, based on my understanding thats just a thing with manuals. Just pop it in nuetral and let the gears spin then put it first. You probably have the same issue with reverse as well.

yea i do... sometimes i push it ALL THE WAY to the right and pull down and think to myself.. 'it MUST HAVE gone in' then i try to back up and it just rev..but when i put it back in neutral and back in to reverse with much less effort..it just goes in.
