Shifting into gear

Shifting into gear

Postby jbade » Mon May 23, 2005 7:29 am

I have a '99 Solara with automatic transmission, and for a while now, the shifter doesn't always lock into gear. There is a lot or play in the shifter.

Also, when I put my car in park the other day, the car started rolling down the hill because although the shifter was in "P", the trans was still in "R". I had to wiggle the gear shifter to make the trans go to "P".

It seems as though the cable from my transmission is stretched out. Is this really the problem or do I have more severe transmission problems? Has anyone else had any type of problem like this?

Its the thing that puts the car into certain gear..It might be worn out of loose. Its in the transmission not cable..Might want to get that check out..WOnt be fun to be on the highway with a hot cup of coffee then all the sudden the car hits Reverse and yeah..Hotness.....

pull that plastic piece off, and there is a screw that holds a metal piece in which slides when you move the shifter... that should be tightened... Its all in teh shifter assembly itself.. just a loose bolt/screw

I've had the console apart. It doesn't looke like there's anything in there for this problem. I agree with "DatSRBoi". I think it's in the trans.

The car has popped out of D on the highway and went to N.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know what specific part it is?

Is your car under any warrantee? Its best to take it to a dealership who has the blueprint of the car. Unless you know a shop who knows allot and will get the problem done. Other then that good luck.

Sounds like a simple adjustment to me. I can send you the procedure if you put your email address in your profile and also say whether you're talking about a 4 or 6 cylinder car.

I had that problem on my older Camry a few years back......eventually the tranny gave out on me...but it was a 90 Camry so it was expected.

I would suggest youget that looked at ASAP if your car is shifting on its own while your driving on the highway........that obviously can't be safe.......

......most dealerships however do not do tranny work if it needs it, they'd sent it to another shop that does all those repairs so you might be better off having someone you know that is certified in that field to check it out.
