high idle at start. is this this typical?

my 2000 v6 solara idles high when first started around 1.75rpm. throttle body was cleaned w/in the last 10k. ive only had the car a month so i dont know if it idled like this previously

it takes only a minute and a half to idle down to 1 or a little under but i am not a patient person.

i assume it isnt good for the tranny to be engaged daily at this high idle right?

anyone else experience this?

haha. . . is this the first car you have started up when it's been sitting there for a long time? It's normal for a car to idle high at first on a start up after the engine has cool down then it will go back down to normal.

haha no... i have had many cars and this one idles high enough relative to the tranny to give me the impression that over time it will not be good for the tranny


just bought a 2001 accord and this car does not push the engine this high. a little higher than when warm but not to almost 2000rpm

also when i pull away the car takes off by itself. not fast but just a little more than i would expect it to.

put it this way if i was at a redlight with my car idling this high and i didnt pay close attention to holding the brake firmly,the car would creep foward. the brake must be held pretty firm to not roll while in drive and idling high

if this is typical i would think you all would notice it. anyone notice their solara idling higher than other cars you have owned at the days first start of the engine?

Maybe you should check this out. . . man I don't know what it is called but its right beside the throttle body where the cable is connected to because sometimes dirt gets caught into the spring coil part. . . you just need to spray it with WD40 and it will be ok. That is what happen my friends car cause it was dirty and when he gave it some gas the throttle body will remain open so you just got to clean it off and it will be good.

Most modern toyotas will do that

It is for emissions - the increased idle will help to heat up the catalytic converter quicker. You'll notice on real cold days it may hit 2k for a few seconds and then drop. On a real warm day the idle should be lower

^^^^ I agree, car always idles in the morning before I go to work.....just let it warm up for about a minute and a half and your good to go.....

You should also take what "StockSolara" said into consideration also.....I gotta look into the for my Avee......tomorrow morning.

maybe next time, you don't clean the throttle body, even my 11 years old camry V6 will idle high (like over 2k rpm ) when engine is cold, to heat up the engine quicker, i guess.

I get the same thing in my '03. It idles high all the time for about 2 minutes sometimes longer. Its really annoying, considering every car I had previous to this one would not idle that high at all. Im always late so I just put into to gear and it does give the tranny a pretty good clunk. I know it can't be good for it.

he's completely right. open loop operation (no o2 sensor inputs) is used until the system is at operating temperature. Then the closed loop (inputs from o2 sensors) control the a/f mix/idle/etc etc

High starting idle is normal for the reasons that have been listed.

It's only to warm up, you can test this by starting it up and leaving it for a minute and watching the RPMs drop, and then turning your car off and starting it again, it will be around 800 RPMs or so because it's already warmed up.
