oil change question

oil change question

Postby socalisolara » Tue May 31, 2005 9:50 pm

i had my oil change on my gen1 solara for the first time today. but i have a quick question regarding the grade of the oil; is it 5w 30 or 10w 30. the guy at the local oil change place told me that all the solara's ONLY take 5w 30. Is this true?

i had always thought that the 10w30 was good for the summer while the 5w30 was good for the winter? or was their a 4cyl and a 6 cyl difference between the two?

Sup Bro,

In regards to the V-6 Solara, it takes 5 (listed in the manual is 4.8 quarts)quarts of oil and the recommended grade is 5W-30. This information can be retained on the factory oil cap (as labeled). This is also listed in the owners manual. Hopefully this helps out. :D

my oil cap on my Gen 1.5 says to use 5W-30 and I use it all through the seasons no problem. Just check your owners manual...it should say what oil to use in what temperature ranges.

Here is a long explaination (please bair with me Bro :P )... It really depends on the cilmate you live in where excessive heat is present (for example constant 110+ degree weather). This extreme heat quickly breaks down the viscosity of the oil. Thick oil is not always good for an engine. Yes, the thicker oil will provide a thicker layer of protect for the walls of the combustion chamber; however, if the oil is of a lower viscosity (standard mineral oil) it tends to gum up the valves with sludge, varnish and carbon build-up. It also puts stress on the oil pump. With all these stress conbined, they make the engine work harder due to more resistance. This transilates to more fuel consumption (poor fuel economy)... Some mechanic use the thicker oil in worry that the thinner oil will seep through the head gaskets; therefore, they use the thicker oil to keep it from leaking out...... It really depends in the area you live in and is souly the owners free will.... Hopefully this info is helpfull :P

Peace,
-G

Bottomline: if you live in a area that sees harsh winters, go 5w30 (Like Wisconsin); if you live in texas..where harsh winters are 2 days out of the year..get 10w30!

Hmm, so as a bloke living in Florida I guess I'm using the wrong grade and should switch to 10. Which is the "thinner" oil, 5w or 10w?

supposely 5w-30 has better fuel efficiency and suitable for most of weather range in US, thats why most of car is recommend 5w-30.

Yeap that right.
5w-30 is thinner and recommended cause saves gas.
But 10w-30 is thicker, for summer if you get the hot weather.
