steering issue

steering issue

Postby JAYDEE23 » Sun Jun 12, 2005 8:02 am

my car has a weird steering issue. it vibrates on the highway only sometimes and only after 65-70 mph

but here is the weird thing before 65-70 everything is normal but after, there is a spot right in the center of the steering that seems like something is loose or there is some play that should not be there. again this is ONLY after 65-70

before that everything is normal...any ideas?

Sounds like you got BALANCE problem. Also, does car pull either left or right? If so you should have front end alignment checked and rotate those tires every 3000 miles as it will ensure even tire wear and longer life.

no pulling or any signs of off balance or mis-alignment under 65-70

you think that "loose" spot in the center only at high speeds could be alignment/balance?

Its balance.

You cant feel misbalance until you hit about 60, then your steeringwheel and/or passenger side seat start vibrating.

Seat is rear wheels, steering wheel is front wheels.

do you have aftermarket wheels? if yes, could be hub rings.

Hey JAYDEE, let us know if that solves is (at least let me know if you dont mind) because I seem to be having the same problem, although the car goes straight as an arrow so I didnt think it was the balance and alignment.... my friends believe it may be the brakes too but who knows. I'm actually replacing my brakes soon so we'll see if that does it.

I agree with the other posters who said that balancing the wheels will solve your problem. I had the same problem once; the car was fine till about 60-65 mph and then the steering wheel would start vibrating. I got the wheels balanced and the problem was gone. I'm sure you'll have the same experience.

i have almost the same problem, but it is more of the opposite...when i drive around 60 and then brake to slow down, my steering wheel shakes like crazy, and then after i do that, every time i slow down, the wheel shakes. im guessing its the brakes, but i need reassurance so i can just go and get better brakes

yeah sounds like brakes to me..warped rotor(s) possibly.

cheapest fix for that is to have your rotors ground or "turned" down.

if you have a midas next to you they will do each one for 10-20 bux. beats buying new rotors.
