Resetting CEL without Setting Off Alarm?

Resetting CEL without Setting Off Alarm?

Postby Duffman » Tue Jun 14, 2005 11:34 pm

First... I used the SEARCH function and found nothing.

Second... I checked the manual and found nothing.

Now, here's my problem: I have a check engine light. Car's running fine, and I'm 90% certain that the CEL is on because I put a fuel stabilizer in my car (I had to put regular unleaded in it, and I'm paranoid about that garbage...). My guess is that the emissions from the fuel stabilizer (Lucas Fuel Stabilizer) are upsetting the O2 sensor in the exhaust system. Car's running fine, that tank of gas is gone and refueled, but the light's still on. Nothing's acting up, nothing's going wrong - it's just on. I'm not going to spend money trying to get a code to tell me what I'm already almost certain it is.

I know you can reset the CEL by disconnecting the battery terminal for ~5 minutes, reconnecting it, pumping the brakes five times and starting the car. The issue I have is this: Every time I disconnect the battery, the alarm goes off (think Panic Button honking) until I hit the Unlock button on my keychain. I'm not sure why, but it's annoying and I don't want that to happen. How do I stop it? (note - this is the stock panic button / theft deterrance system, not an aftermarket unit) Any help would be appreciated.

first i would take the car to any autozone and have them get the code and look it up for you.. it is free and i cant see any reason you wouldnt do this.

second the stock alarm is nor wired to batt?

if you can shut it off by hitting the unlock why not just do that?

leave the cable off the batt while you do something like take a shower or something like that..should reset the cel

again i would for sure double check at autozone..you never know!

The CEL code reader device they let you borrow at the AutoZone can also erase CEL codes, hope this helps GL
