Does anyone know what is involved in installing a new odometer and where to get one new or used?

Isn't it a few screws and some clips......then just unplug the old one and plug in the new one ?

I would check ebay for that part, they always seem to have it at a better price then the junkyard, if not I'd check the junkyard second.

You can also use the cluster from a 4th Gen Camry. Just make sure you get the one for automatic or if you're a 5spd you'll need to find that cluster.

its 6 screws, clips, and 3 plugs for the cluster.

Are we talking the whole gauge cluster or just the odometer?

if u are replacing the whole cluster, ur original mileage will not be there anymore, the memory of mileage is stored in the cluster, not in ECU or somewhere else.

Yes it is...
I got a gauge cluster off Ebay witha bout 28k on it. (Came with Indiglos and CF Bezel) I pluged it in briefly, turned on the ignition, and it did indeed read 28k.

So its definitly something to look out for. Mileage does get put on your carfax record from time to time, but for some cars it doesnt (Last reading on my own carfax is from when I first got the car, and im almost at 60k now. It definitly gets recorded when you register it though). I dont know if theres any surefire way to tell the mileage though, so you just have to trust that the gauge cluster was not swapped out with one with lower mileage.
