Inspired by another member who modified his ebay short ram into something resembling this, I set out to replicate it, without spending more than $10.

I got this 3" steel tubing from my local muffler shop (2.75" dia. for exact fit on stock rubber couplers). The 5/8" nipple was bought from the auto parts store. Cut to 5" long, I center punched and drilled a 5/8" hole in the middle of the pipe.
Image

JB weld is the coolest. Was actually able to thread the nipple into the hole slightly, but the weld makes it secure and permanent. I let it dry overnight...
Image

...then painted with three coats of engine enamel. Look at it! Like a ripe piece of metal fruit hanging from the vine, ready to be picked. (paint fumes rock)
Image

Trimming the excess fat was a liberating experience. Easily removed a couple screws on the driver's side splash guard to get the big white tub out. Behold the parts of the buffalo the Indians didn't use.
Image

After putting it all together I was left with this.

Closing Remarks

Project cost
One foot pipe.........$3
JB weld.................$4
Nipple...................$3

Turns out I bought too much pipe - reason being I was planning on extending the intake lower in the fender well, but upon removing the primary resonator I found that the piping coming from the airbox was sufficient.

First impressions
No louder than stock when cruising. Very mellow and civilized, untill you get on the throttle. This thing has a sweet, sweet roar now. Butt dyno says the same if I were to spend ~300 on a CAI. One to two placebo horsepower at best, slightly livelier throttle response, yada yada... IMO the project is fully worth the minimal cost and hour or so of real work (rest of the time was spent waiting for jb weld and paint to dry). I did not alter any stock pieces, I simply removed one resonator and replaced another with a better flowing design, so this is completely reversible. Some people may run into trouble finding a drill bit. I was lucky enough to have bits around the garage already but if you have some crappy wood bits you can use those, just keep it lubed, set the drill to high and dont push down hard.

Looks sharp man. Good thinking on the project.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

VERY Nice. I was planning to try this for the Gen2 sometime over the next two weeks.

What kind of tubing did you end up using? (Stainless?) The nipple looks to be aluminum. Very nice.

Grat job. Thanks for the info.

Was the inspiration by me? If so Wow awesome... :)
It does helps in having a more clean flow rather shaky through that box thing... Cheap yet just as effective. Way better then the Ebay one..

I spent 200 on a custom cai but I would have spent a LOT less if I had known the extention was just a 90 degree bend. look at my website.

Nice job...on the DIY too.

Removing lower intake and replacing upper with a pipe was one of my first mods with this car. If others are considering this, 2.75" dia pipe fits the stock flexible couplers a little better. An air breather on the cam cover vent can be used as an alternative to the hose routed back to the intake.

Thats a good idea, but are you sure that cam cover hose dosent need to be hooked into the intake (for vacuum?). And you're also correct about the pipe diameter. I had to wrestle the couplers onto the 3" but I wanted something fairly beefy and plan to replace those with blue silicone couplers. However 2.75" would be the ideal size.

Yeap 2.75" is the exact fit for it.
Will do it later.

Pretty sure it doesn't need vacuum. A very small amount of oil likes to leak out of the air breather (this is normal), so the typical solution for stock engine set-ups is to route it back to the engine/intake so it does not leak on the ground. Some folks rig up an oil catch can for a show quality clean engine bay.

I think it's just a matter of preference, no noticable performance advantage either way.

Agreed, but it is an option if you dont have access to bits or are too lazy to drill and weld a nipple. (not accusing you of being lazy of course, lol) Plus preventing the venting into the intake will help keep the TB and plenum cleaner. Now if anyone has an idea on how to defeat the EGR, then that thing will stay clean enough to do beer bongs through.
