possible tranny problem

possible tranny problem

Postby acc » Sat Jun 25, 2005 4:20 pm

I have a 2001 SLE with about 80K kms. I have just noticed this happenning in the last few days. When the engine is cold ( as in not driven for at least a few hours) the idle is much higher than its ever been and for the first few minutes of driving, the car won't shift to third. Any ideas what might be causing this?

The high idle is normal. The not shifting could be a proble. Have you ever had the tranny drained, flushed and serviced? If not at 80K I would.

normal

I don't think its normal. Mine just started doing the no shift thing in the last few days. Is yours just idling high or does it not like to shift into 3rd for a few minutes like mine? I'm taking it in on Thursdy, so we will see if the Toyota people say it's normal or not.

get a tranny flush and let your car warm up a little before driving.

We've gone over this before but...

For emissions purposes, toyota ignores data from the o2 sensors and lets the car hold a gear longer in order to heat up.

You should notice it more in the winter than summer

Consider getting your coolant levels and sensors checked out, usually that may be the case of high idles. If its not that have your o2 sensors checked out, it could be running on lean as well. Thats what I did on my '99 Camry LE (4-banger). Turned out it was low coolant levels. Fixed that and the idle on a cold start was lower than before.

the delayed shifting is directly related to your engines temp so the ingnoring of the 02 sensor until your engine heats up sound right to me.

however the 02 sensor can cause a later shift?

i am real curious to learn exactly what happens and what toyota intended to happen regarding shift points and engine temp..

please keep us posted if you get any info from toyota..!! :fadein:

Well, Toyota said its completly normal. Still seems unusual to me. I live in a very climate that gets extemely cold in the winter. If its doing it this noticeably now, can't wait to see how it reacts in -40. Can someone point me to the thread that originally discussed this topic?

i would really like to know if others have this issue ? i have a 2000v6.

do other years do this? other mnodels camry etc..

with 120 views you would think more people would chime in on this and confirm their solara does this also.

and if the car was indeed designed to do this why are some stating this has just stared and others not responding at all?

something fishy w/ this issue here?
