side exhaust proposal

1) i understand that there is an optimal flow given per engine and that straight pipes will decrease low end torque. on the flipside, as any lame brain would know, top end is significantly increased and another crucial aspect that you left out (in which i am a little more concerned about than most) is shift response. im tired of hitting second gear in my auto and waiting for the extra 200-300 rpms to feel a pull. i know the exhaust will help majorly. (i race from a roll 98% of the time anyways)

2) i tried to say it nicely a few times before, there will be no pulling over, never heard of it for this situation, no smog check. no legality issues. i know people with straight pipes and many various makes and models and absolutely no problems. [ im probably going with the QTEC (lol) anyways ]

3) i am not soft. car enthusiast should not be soft. getting a headache or permenant ear damage from open exhaust is only a side effect of enjoying what i got to the maximum. (windows up cruise with a V6 drone btw is like heaven)

Sounds like you have got a good grasp on the pros and cons. However on #1, no change to the exhaust will affect your transmission responsiveness. If it is affected, it is through adjustments made by the ECU. (I'm not sure about Gen 1 tranny's but Gen 2s are electronically controlled.) I assume no one makes a shift kit or modified valve body for Toyota.

Good luck on #2. If your area doesn't enforce this, that's cool and I'm jealous.

Best of luck on your mod. Post up pics when you can.

if you're serious about this why dont you save a paycheck or two and do something about your y-pipe bottleneck? have you ever been under your car and taken a look at that mess? while you're at it delete the cat and run new mandrel bent pipe to the back with a couple straight through resonators and an exhaust tip of your choosing.

I did that a while ago and the only thing that was different about the car was that there a slight loss of low end :(

I, however, did gap the muffler from the piping. Now it sounds like I have an exhaust (and at no cost at all).

All this stuff hes talking about will destroy the low end torque. Its gonna suck big time for daily driving. Fuel economy will probably suffer since you'll be winding out the engine all the time to get any power to the ground.

you guys whine about low end a lot.

i dont remember one time when i raced someone while i was at less than 4k rpms the whole way.

i like to pull hard up top anyways, so the more the bottom loss the better lol.

its pretty sick when someone surprises you with a blow-by and then you can pull on em.

some of you guys are starting to sound kind of soft

Your now being an idiot. Car tuning isnt about all Hp and youll be fast. It requires the right balance to create the best possible performance focker. So if you have 225 for instance on your dam stock automatic solara (Not to mention your restrictive intake so no in means no out) from the exhaust thing here and you loose 30 lbs or Tq, by the time you get our heavy solara up into the high ends, that other car would be way ahead of you. Just throw a cat back exhaust onto your car and have 4 or 5 of your friends sit in it, youll see low or high ends wont do you no good. So STFU and think first. This idea is good only if you know how to set it up, not say drop the Tq and expeect your high Hp in the high end to bring you heaven. For all I know my car would kill you everytime. Sh!t had to let that out.
