Rusty rotors...

my passenger side rotors are rusty, don't know how that happened. It seemed to just happen overngiht...scary. Can anyone explain this? Does this affect the performace of the brakes? Does it need to be changed? How can i get rid of that muck?

This is VERY common in cars that have been sitting for a couple days.

Don't worry about it. It's just a surface coating that will be wiped off when you apply the brakes.

Your rotors are in no danger of rusting through. It's just a pain that most cars have to experience.

Just take it easy on the brakes for the first couple of stops.

One of my neighbors did something stupid by using WD-40 on his rotors to get the rust off. (I found this out after I saw him blow through the stop sign at the end of the block. What a lame-o!)

lol it is fine. I got a set of JDM civic SI-R rear disc brake set for my civic conversion. it was very rusty (since it rode the shipping boat to here)...but after drive few miles...all the rust were gone and it works perfect.

my rotors are rusted to hell. the braking surface is pristine but around the perimeter by the rotor vent vanes is a thick crust of rust. i can pick at it and watch chunks of rust flake off onto my rims. the hub section of the rear rotors started looking so ugly i painted it silver.

OMG! That is hilarious! I would, at the very minimum, clean them up before posting pictures on EBay. Have they no shame?

you will find you rotors can rust in a matter of hours. they do not need to sit for days or even overnight. evrytime i wash my car the rotors are starting to rust shortly after unless i take it for a spin..nothing to worry about.

the sheild on the outside of the rotor is another story. if it rusts to the point that is starts flapping around it could get jammed between the rotor and pad and make your car come to a screeching halt like mine did!

Mine are like that too...I'm waiting until I need new brakes, then I'll get some new rotors...but other than that, there's nothing wrong with them.
