3ed speed gate missed often

3ed speed gate missed often

Postby Monkeyman » Fri Jul 15, 2005 11:31 am

Am I the only one who finds that the shift from 2'nd to 3'ed can often be missed? I have the TWM short shifter, a TRD short shifter before that, and the factory shifter before that, and with all three I often miss the shift in to 3'ed. I am not going into 1'st or 5'th, just hitting the post. Am I alone here? Maybe my sychros are dying so the tranny isn't going into 3'ed?

I posted in "possible trainny prolem" forum that i have exactly the same problem. A lot of times exactly the same thing happens to me. When I try to shift quickly at high revs i dont push it far enough to the right and it does not go into 3rd. So i have to move it back a lil and then more to the right and finally forward into 3rd gear. I dont think there is anything abnormal. Solara was never meant to be a racing car so manual was not designed for quick shifts. However, i may be wrong.

Another thing that i have and i think it's me not having enough practice at shifting at high revs is that when i go into 3rd, sometimes i have to push the shifter pretty hard to make it go in. On the other hand when i crap at 2000-3000 rpm it goes smoothly. I think this happens cuz i dont sync rpms and speed of the wheels well enough when acelerating quickly. Trying to learn, but dont really wanna do this too often cuz gas is expensive and it's not the best thing to do for the engine and clutch. But does anyone have any ideas/tips?

I'm gonna try double-clutching next time.

Found the problem, and it was just what I thought: Synchros are toast! Transmission was replaced yesterday by NOHO Toyota. When a car has a problem with third it tends to be a give away that the synchros are on their way out, as third is the most used gear. I only wrote this post to find out if this was a common problem with the solara, but everyones response made it clear that the problem was wear, and not a common problem with Solaras.

Maybe he doesn't know what he's doing, but I am sure if he just pulls the air filter off his car, he will instantly be moved to "genius" status. :-?

Top fuel dragster=daily driver solara?
This inequality doesn't make much sense to me. Of course not caring about your car's engine doesn't either. Don't critique other people's questions when you have not been so wise yourself!

I didn't say anything about top fuel. Top fuel with an inline four? Good luck! I would like to meet Ashley Force though.... My car wouldn't upshift or downshift into 3ed, that fits bad synchros perfectly (at third, not all the rings otherwise I would have had to shift into second to get back into first from a standing start, and would have had a problem with all gears), and the dealer agreed. They replaced the transmission and now the problem is gone. Yeah, I'd say the problem was with that trasmission! I watched them remove and replace it, so I am certain it was replaced and not repaired. I learned that a problem with third gears could be caused by worn synchros by listening to "Car Talk" on NPR. Tom and Ray thought sychros were the cause, NOHO Toyota thought the sychros were the cause, and while I have no idea what the inside of a manual tranny is all about I do know that if Tom and Ray say "This is what's wrong," than that is whats wrong. Why am I getting crap for this? I knew there was a problem with my car, I called the right people, I had it looked at and got a second opinion, and had it fixed. The only one who didn't agree that the tranny needed repair are the people responding as such in this post.

There was a problem, the suspect part was replaced, problem went away. I'd say that's pretty clear. The car even power shifts (don't let up the gas, drop the clutch fast slam the shifter into the next gear, and let the clutch pop out from underneight your foot) into third with no problem now.
