 No, I would even go as far to say that you should just weld the hood shut, (sarcasm) of course you should! Have it checked out, changed, and wiped. Or the cure will cost you more than the diesease

I agree. I got my 99 SLE at 69k and I'm quite sure it never had anything other than oil changes and new tires. IMO, 80-100k is definately tune-up time. My car just hit 86k, so I had a major tune-up done (plugs, wires, belts, water pump, etc.). It isn't cheap, so get an estimate and be prepared. I wish I had - my jaw hit the floor when I got the bill. However, my car runs a lot smoother, I get better gas mileage, and I feel better about driving it :D

I thought the belts supposta last 90k and the water pump should last as long as the car does (could be wrong about that). Coolant is every 30k; spark plugs and tranny fliud every 60k.

I got my pump and belt replaced a little while ago since the thing blew..still dont know why (Im at 58k), but it cost me 700 bucks parts n labor.

Yeah, you're right on the money for the belts, coolant and plugs. I double-check the factory maintenance schedule. I don't think it ever mentions replacing the water pump because it isn't really one of those parts that's supposed to be replaced on a regular basis. However, every good dealer knows that they tend to go out around 75k-100k, so it's a good idea to go ahead and replace it when you go in for the 90k tune-up. It does strike me as odd that yours went out at 58k. Maybe it was a defective part or something.

If you're curious about maintenance schedules, here's a good link:

I just got a 99 I4 with 79K miles from a used car dealer 7 weeks ago. Toyota dealer said I needed to change the belts and water pump (because the cap was making noise??), so I did it at a local garage, plus had the two front struts replaced. Mileage after that was 18.5mpg. Two of my tires were the original, well worn, so I changed them, put the new tires on the front, and now had my 2nd tank of gas, with mpg of 14.5.

I have not had the car long enough to see any pattern, but 18.5 and 14.5 for the first two tanks seem apalling. Does anyone know if this is due to engine problems or if I need more time to see the average mpg? Thanks.

idle noise

Postby Anik321 » Mon Jul 18, 2005 12:48 pm

I dont mean to hijack this thread, but I had a similar question:

i got mine at 74k, and now at 89k I just had a 90k servicing done at the dealers.

its just that for the last few thousand, the car sounds like an old car (well I know its old). Before the engine would make a very clean lexus like sound, but now it sounds like a very small steam engine.

i wish I could make you guys listen to it.

know what it could be ?

i was told the trick for keeping your labur costs low was to do the pump and the timeing belt at the same time as to get to one you need to remove the other so to fix it together makes sence

Sounds like they might have gotten the cam sprokets misaligned when changing out the timing belt. It's also possible that there might be something wrong with the tensioner. I don't know what else they could have done to screw things up *shrugs*

It's possible that you need new spark plugs and/or wires. One of your O2 sensors might be giving a false reading as well. I know my gas mileage really suffered before I replaced mine. Other than that, try replacing the fuel filter. Maybe you (or some other previous owner) got some bad fuel at some point. I don't know what else it could be and it sounds really strange to me that the problem is getting that much worse over such a small period of time.

Get a new water pump/timing belt/spark plugs/basic tuneup/alignment/balancing/check the brakes/check the tranny and you're set. The V6 tranny are known to sludge so you might want to check up on it.
