O2 sensor P0136

O2 sensor P0136

Postby trioptimum » Sun Jul 24, 2005 8:13 pm

Just replaced the EGR position sensor... now I've got a code for the downstream O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 2. Does it definitely need replaced or is this a side effect of the EGR sensor being replaced?

Any tips on how to replace that sensor? Never done one before; I think cutting/splicing a universal one under the car would be easier than taking the seat out to direct fit an OEM one... any thoughts?

Thanks peeps. Hoping to get through the new-car-breaking-constantly stage soon ><.

Need a little clarification.

There is only 1 downstream O2 sensor, it sits on the topside of the pipe, about at the middle of the passenger cabin. It does not control the fuel trim, it pretty much lets you know if the cat is functioning properly. Since I am not running a cat, I have the P0420 code. One can rig up an O2 simulator to cheat the code or if you don't have emissions testing, ignore the light.

The bank 1 upstream sensor is the rear bank so you would have to get to it from underneath. I had mine replaced using OEM parts at the cost of $130/sensor, yeah, pretty salty. If you have a scan tool, the upstream O2 sensors should fluctuate between rich and lean at idle, so just watch the voltage. The upstream sensors have fuel trim input so get it fixed, don't know if a non OEM part would work or not although I would think a domestic O2 sensor would be cheaper.

Thanks for the info; that code (p0136, bank 1 sensor 2) refers to the downstream one, right? I'm about to go cut the wires and replace it, so if that's not the one, somebody please let me know :P. Autozone told me that was the downstream one and I got a universal 4 wire Bosch sensor for $70 from em'. Thanks guys.

Yes, I think I know what you are saying. Bank 1 sensor 2 is the rear bank of cylinders but it is considered an upstream sensor because it is upstream of the cat. 1mz has 2 upstream O2 sensors, the other one is at the front of the engine bay. We have one downstream sensor that's located in the cat back section.
