I4 vs V6

I4 vs V6

Just curious if there is anybody who has driven the 2.4 I4 and the V6. How far off are they in power? Can you really tell a big difference? For just daily driving are you going to notice a big difference? I know the differences in horsepower and torque and gas mileage and things, but I want to hear from some people that have actually driven the two.

Sorry if this has been talked about before, but could not find anything in the search because it brought back so many hits. try searching for I4 and v6 you'll get a ton.

Sorry to be a dic, but I already said I know the numbers for horspower differences and torque. Plus it was the 2.4 i was talking about. I wanted to hear from people that have actually driven the two. Compare the two for me. Not so much numbers here, but feel.

I've drven both the V6 and own an I4. There is a big difference when you get on a V6 then when you get on the I4 of course. The only time where its really that necessary is getting onto the highway.......but being that I have the I4, I don't have no problem with mine getting on the highway. The Gen 1 & 1.5 motors are also different and I think the newer motor is also a little quicker then the old.

If your looking for another Solara for daily driving, the I4 is great on gas especially with gas prices going up......but if you want the power, get the V6. Just keep in mind your not getting a Supra so it won't fly.

I have the 5S-FE 2.2L I4, and my friend has a 1MZ-FE 3.0 V6. Both 2000, both Solaras. I was driving her car while my car was in the shop.

Huge difference, expecially going uphill or getting on the highway. V6 goes when you tell it to. I4 thinks about it for a bit and goes "Ill give it my best shot". V6 is a bit smoother in revving too. (4's got more grunt and revs more like a beast, even though it clearly isnt)

For my I4, when im on a slight uphill incline on a highway, I'm at 3k RPM or more to maintain 75mph. I've never took the V6 to that speed (Gotta be careful with other peoples property eh?), bit I imagine it would be in the low to mid 2ks.

However, I just drove back from canada on one tank of gas last week and my warning light wasnt on yet. I dont think the V6 could have done that.

After you get on the highway, and when not going uphill, either one works about the same.

The 2AZ-FE 2.4L I4 is the newest family of engines put into the Solara, and probably acts alot more like the V6 than the 2.2L - Probably smoother, quieter, and doesn't have to rev as high to maintain speed in inclines. I don't think theres much to complain about with the 2AZ. the 1MZ has more pull im sure, but its not enough to make your scramble to sell your car.

I hear from the Scion guys that 2AZ has alot of potential too, way more thant he 5S or 1MZ's ever had. If you really wanna tangible difference, you might want to look into some custom built performance upgrades.

2azfe is IMO one of the smoothest 4 bangers toyota has made. I have a 5sfe cus IMO, this is one of the most 'reliable' engine toyota ever produced. 2az is pretty new so i'm not sure how it performs when engines hit 200K miles. I also have a imzfe, this was a great engine for its time...but its sad to see this thing still linger around in gen5 camrys.

City driving you will not notice too much of a difference driving 2az from the 1mz (unless your the guy who gunns it at every light). For normal driving the 2az is pretty adequate.

Highways driving the big differences you will note when merging to highways and when overtaking someone.

MPG: obviously 4 banger will save on gas. My 1mz only gives me 25-26 mpg if i'm lucky. 1mz is a bad bad city car. When wifee drives it in the city, i get 180 miles on a full tank of gas! I not driven a 2az in the city 'convervatively' to comment, but even driving like it did, i was easily getting 200miles on fillups (city only). I don't recall if 2az's come with rear disc brakes..if you do go for 2az, make sure its got abs so that you also have those rear disc's (IMO disc's look better than drum brakes).

Let's put it in terms of this, there is no way a i4 2.2 or 2.4 can take or even pull on a stock or lightly modded V6 without turbo or Supercharged. The feel on a V6 is so much stronger than a i4, and yes I've driven both. Hell I've owned both....so yeah if your just concerned about the feel of the differences between the two yeah the V6 is powerful.

That's my 2 cents and correction for my earlier post.

all non-toyota owners think my car is a v6. The VVT-i has a LOT more torque than non vvt-i 1mz engines. In the end, the higher horsepower wins, but in low gears and for daily driving, the 2.4L is enough. Ask IcrazychrisI... i had 2 people and the a/c on ... he had himself with the ac off... he sluggishly walked from me... (he's stock)
1GR-FE ftw!
