I4 vs V6

I like my 04 solara because it looks good and saves so much gas. I get no less than 30 mpg on most trips. The best mpg reading I ever got from driving my four banger solara was 34 mpg.

maybe like an 11.99999 if yur really lucky. and a 1mz on 18 psi would put you deep into the 10's im sure. we will all find out soon enough.

The tuning of the 2az has only begun. There is a built stroked 2.6 2az with 700+ horses already. Think thats good for a better than 11.99999 pass???

might as well 2jz the solara if yur gunna talk about that kind of work.

i thought you said on the stock motor... oh wait.... ya you did its even in the quote

I'm seeing 31 MPG on the dash gauge, average. Driving mostly 2 lane roads (~55 MPH). I got a 2.4L with the 5-speed Auto.

Comparing slushbox models, I'd say the 5-speed Auto makes the 2.4L about as quick as the latest-generation Camry LE V6 with the old 4-speed Auto we've driven. Especially driving around town. Not for the NHRA set, but I wouldn't call the 2AZ slow.

Believe me, I've driven slow. . . :drinking:

And I agree with another poster that it's one of the smoothest 4 Cylinders I've ever driven.

I recently test drove a new 2.4 manual Camry. Very smooth for a 4cyl, and moved out OK. Then got back in my V6 manual Solara and drove home. NO COMPARISON. The V6 just pulls so much harder, night and day difference.

Yes I did say on stock motor. The stock block has handled up 450 hp at the wheels. Then, it snapped a driveshaft at the track....

I was just thinking, you know how us 1MZ Solara guys have to watch as the 1MZ MR2's makes big power and we can't do it in the Solaras. Will this happen with the 2AZ Solaras? Where only the Tc can produce high numbers?

MR2 is RWD and a mid mounted engine. tC and Solara are both FWD with front mounted engines, so its definitly more similiar than Camry platform to MR2's platform. (tC is based on the Avensis platform, a european model very similar to a slightly smaller Camry). The problem is that no company is going to put as much R&D into the Solara as the tC, so everything is built for the tCs engine bay. So piping might have to be rerouted, etc, which could have unpredictable effects. But I really dont see any reason that the 2AZ in the Solara wouldnt have the same potential as the tC's. Someone needs to pioneer the Solara 2AZ Turbo project. Once thats done, Im sure you can dial the turbo just as high as the tC can on stock internals.

And then after its gets boost get the car on a cover of some awsome tuner magazine and take it to lots of big cars shows get the solara all hyped up and maybe people will mod them like accords are these days. Then there would be lots of parts!

yea it would be nice to see a turbo or a supercharger kit for the 2AZ solara.

There are a few tc turbo companies currently doing R+D for the solara. Scionspeed is currently looking for a solara and ZPI was prepared to offer a deal for their solara donor. This was quite some time ago and I dont know if anything panned out. After I buy my house, I might make the trip up to KY to see ZPI :)
