What's a coupe?

What's a coupe?

Postby 4banger » Sun Dec 15, 2002 3:03 am

WHen I bought my solara, the dealer called it a 2-door sedan, and said that the difference between a sedan and a coupe was the amount of back seat cubic ft. I see on the web page that toyota calls it a coupe. So What exactly is the difference?

it actually has to do with trunk space. I think anything under 7 cubic feet of trunk space is a coupe, not completely sure.

even if that's true about the trunk space...can a 4 door ever be called a coupe?? or is it impossible to have that amount of trunk space and still have 2 doors? i don't think that the solara trunk is small at all.

generally speaking (minus the trunk thingy)
4 doors=sedan
2 doors=coupe

Maybe it's the amount of glove compartment doors and how many cubic inches in the glove box?

This is what i've understood my life (and I could be wrong):
A coupe is two door version of a car which is also available in the 4 door version. For example: WE ALL SOLARA GUYS!!, Honda accord coupe, G35 Coupe, Civic Coupe! versus...the other two door cars (like celica, prelude
are called sports sedans or sports cars). Trunkspace, glovebox (LOL), or rear leg room have nothing to do with coupe, or not being a coupe!
Abroad...we pronounce 'coupe'...as COU-PAY. (i think it was french that started that)..

According to Merriem-Websters (http://www.m-w.com)
Coupe -
1 : a four-wheeled closed horse-drawn carriage for two persons inside with an outside seat for the driver in front
2 usually coupe : a 2-door automobile often seating only two persons; also : one with a tight-spaced rear seat -- compare SEDAN

Since we aren't horse-drawn... I'm guessing we're #2.

Sedan -
1 : a portable often covered chair that is designed to carry one person and that is borne on poles by two men
2 a : a 2- or 4-door automobile seating 4 or more persons and usually having a permanent top -- compare COUPE

#2 once again...

The Solara has adequate room for 4 adults (5 can be nudged in :D )... so right now, I guess the Solara can be a 2-door sedan but the gen 2, according to all the posts found on this site, and others... will be a true coupe. (Did anyone else think of even looking in the dictionary? hehehe)

cou·pé n.

also coupe (kp) A closed two-door automobile.

here's a little aside..it also says ...(interesting..guess our car could be a dessert too..well it is sweet! )

b)The stemmed glass in which a coupe is served.
A shallow, bowl-shaped dessert dish.

Coupe

Postby Dave » Thu Dec 19, 2002 12:09 pm

I think the term coupe means that the vehicle has two doors and does not have a frame around the windows. A two door sedan has a frame around the side windows. That's how the terminology is used to describe classic cars.

It amazes me how sometimes people carry on and on about the most trival BS. Missay cleared it up, technically the solara is a 2 door sedan. Typically any car with 2 doors is a coupe and a car with 4 doors is a sedan.

I cleared it up! she just copied me!!

"vehicle has two doors and does not have a frame around the windows" - dave

civic coupes (at least the 98) has window frames. I think ours don't have the window frame because it's easier to produce one type solara body and change it for the convertible models (soft top conv. don't have 'window frames' from what i know)

lol..yur right xravexboix...but i don't see all the fuss over the whole frame/trunk talk...

simple as pie
2door=coupe
4door=sedan

although, in one of the roadside systems in work, when i'm filling in vehicle information from the cust, after i put in year, make, model, color, length, etc, i have a pull down menu if it's an SUV, 2 door, pickup, duelly, trailer, motorhome, etc.....it's funny cause in that menu it has sedan, coupe, 2door, and 4door all as options. sooo...which do i choose if someone has a solara??? lol..do i put 2door, coupe, or sedan?? :P and if they have a camry, is it 4door or sedan? too much..people make things too complicated

Not THAT simple

4 door has to a sedan
2 door can be sedan, coupe or convert,
BUT if there is a metal frame betreen the top and the body
it is a sedan
Dave was correct :D

Yup, a sedan has a framed window and a coupe does not. A coupe is also referred to as a hard top, or at least was in the old days.
