Traction Control

Is it bad for you engine to keep the traction control off at all times?? I know it keeps the wheels from spinning and probably takes away like 5 hp.. but it's kinda useless in the summer up here in Canada.

it wont hurt ur engine at all. all it does is let the wheels slip

Traction control can be good in certain instances, but most of the time I keep mine off in good weather. Traction control has almost gotten me in an accident once or twice because it's a little unpredictable. Maybe I'm just weird, but I hate it.

The funny things is that, when your traveling in deep snow, it is actually better to have the Traction Control turned off on a FWD car in some cases. Just from experience, I usually have the sucker turned off in the winter. You benefit more with snow tires in the winter than the Traction Control. With the feature turned on, it is hard for the car to dig in the snow and out...

there is a button that may be next to your shifter. i understand it was an option and not all solaras have it.

Is there any way to have it off by default instead of pressing the button every time (without completely disabling it)? What exactly _does_ it help with - braking, or just taking off to fast? It doesn't, say, turn off ABS or anything else, does it?

Short of reprogramming the ECU, I don't think there's a way to change the default status. It helps with wheel slip, that's all. IIRC, it does this by reducing the throttle and (maybe) tapping the brakes. No, disabling the TC doesn't affect the ABS or anything else.
