not true, you need the master key to program the transponder key. not to mention the common theif wouldnt know the combo off the top of his head, nor a spare blank transponder key. i mean if anyone wanted to steal a car that bad, they could steal anything, evne a benz

I did the same thing, but I got my keys cut at Wal-Mart. Did they say why they wouldn't cut yours? The key fob is easy to program as well. Yeah, dealers love making that easy money. If you add it up, they are making nearly $300/hr for programming. It only takes 15 minutes and the key is about $15 (probably even less for them). I don't know how they sleep at night.

I know the theft-lock feature isn't much for a good thief, but it's better than nothing. Most alarms are no match for experienced theives either.

I got a key off ebay for abnout 30 dollars.

You have to push the gas pedal and brake pedal a bunch of different times to program it and get everything to work. However I did it first try.

The whole dealer thing is bullshit.

I ordered my key from ebay, home depot even cut it for free telling em it would be useless because it's a chipped key, and then I went home and using one master key, I programmed the new one.

It really does work.

thats interesting, does your key have a transponder in it? in other words, is the head of it really fat and big? if so, then the only way i could perceive you being able to hotwire it like that was if the key was sitting somewhere nearby in the car or outside. the key doesnt have to actually be in the ignition for it to send to code to the ecu

to program it do u have to have the new key in the car or the original key? I need to know exactly how to do it b/c im not that great w/ cars but i will do anyhting to help save my parents money and if i know exactly how i can do it myself or my brother could do it. I was told that my 2000 wouldnt work w/ a keyless remote b/c supposedly there is no alarm system but there is a a flshing light in the dash and next to it it says security what is that for? Also there is this thing in the upper right of the car right next to the end of the windshield and when i looked in the owners guide it said that it was something w/ security like an alarm or something do 2000's come w/ alarms or what is the point of it?

I got a remote off ebay for 15 bucks and programmed it myself. But it didnt come with a key. I went to toyota to buy one and have it cut and they said there is a chip in the key. It was 90bucks to buy the key and then they would charge for labor to program it. They said they would have to have all the keys and reprogram all the keys again. If i were to buy a key off ebay and have it cut, would i be able to program the key myself?

Absolutely. I did it myself.

The key:

1. Simultaneously depress and release the brake and
accelerator pedals 1 time (one instruction kind of hints that you
should hold the pedals down while you insert the master key, the next
step).
2. Insert the master key in the ignition, but do not turn it.
3. Within 15 seconds press & release the accelerator pedal 5 times.
4. Then within 20 seconds press & release the brake pedal 6 times.
5. Within 10 seconds remove the master key, and insert the new key.
6. Within 10 seconds press & release the accelerator 1 time.
7. The security light will stay off after 60 to 80 seconds indicating the re-programming was successful.
8. Remove the new key, and depress & release the brake pedal
1 time.

The Remote:

1. Start with the following conditions:
a) Key is out of the ignition
b) Driver door is open (all other doors are closed)
c) Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter)
2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a)Using the power lock/unlock switch on the driver's door (with the driver's door still open and unlocked), perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock. A lock/unlock cycle consists of pressing the power lock switch, followed by pressing the power unlock switch on the driver's door panel. Use an even pace and try to go relatively fast.
b)Close, then open, the driver's door.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a) Using the power lock/unlock switch on the driver's door, perform 5 lock/unlock cycles starting with lock, as you did previously.
b) Turn the ignition to "ON" (as far as you can go without cranking your engine), then back to "OFF".
c) Again, turn the ignition to "ON" (as far as you can go without cranking your engine), then back to "OFF".
d) Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (lock then unlock) automatically, indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a) Press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter (the remote) simultaneously for 1 second.
b) Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, hit the lock button by itself and hold it for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle (lock then unlock) once indicating successful programming. If the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice, repeat steps 6a and 6b, as this means the remote has not been accepted.
c) Repeat steps 6a and 6b for each transmitter that will operate the vehicle, including any old transmitters.
7. Close driver's door.
