any of you own or owned a set of bridgestone potenzas on your solara? mine came with them and i despise them. theyre loud, clunky, and expensive. after reading a few reviews on them my feelings were confirmed.
im looking for a less noisy, better feeling all-season tire. any recommendations?

-thanks much

You have Potenza RE92s.

Tires are judged by their types and occassionally their technologies implemented into those tires.

For example, the Birdgestone Potenza RE750 and RE950 have very good grip but louder because they're performance tires. They provide the same wet traction for the life of their tires which is great if you live in Florida.

The michelin MXV4 plus for the V6s are grand touring tires - a combination of noise, shock absorbing, and performance. Fitting in a supercharger, however, guarantees for a set of higher performance tires.

All brands have their good tires and their bad ones.

Tires

Postby JMSinMaryland » Tue Aug 16, 2005 5:04 pm

I hated my Potenzas and Michelins. I will only buy Yokohama and Pirelli. Currently on 3 out of 5 cars in the family I have Yokohama Avid H4s and am ordering a set for my 18" wheels as well as replacing my 16" Michelins with Avid H4s by next season. All season high performance. Jon.

:) Are you running stock wheels (15" or 16" rims)?
And how much are you willing to spend to achieve this goal? :P

The stock RE92s are horrible
Get Kumho 716 HP4s Its 40-50 bucks a corner for 15/16's from Tirerack and way better in all conditions.

I had a set of Potenzas on my Camry, and they were the best tires I think I've ever driven on. Just my thoughts.

tires

Postby Sentinel » Wed Aug 17, 2005 7:33 am

I slapped a set of BFGoodrich Traction T/A's on stock 16" rims : 215/55
I've seen 215/60's in a different tire on the same rim, tho: to get a bit more traction then the 205's the car comes with.

They stick like GLUE compared to the michelin MXV4 plus it came with:
the MXV4's suck: they squeal in the turns and start to slide right about the time the T/A's start to growl a bit and STICK!

I had read a buncha reviews on the tire: it was well liked against other performance all season tires, and is reasonable priced. ( ~ $110 apiece )

The potenzas suck. Im on sumitomo htr+ right now. All season, aggressive tire, treadwear could be better but they are real inexpensive.

I have Kuhmo ECSTA MX and they are by far some of the best tires I have ever used. . . They grip so nicely on the turns and quiet with no squeaking when I do quick turns

^^ exactly, i had them on my solara (since i didn't have a choice when i bought her new). They pretty much suck!

I currently have bridgestone potenza's, (non-RE92) on my camry (they were dealer takeoff's). I have added 25K miles on em' they got great tread, but there is road noice. I loved my yokohama's but i recently bough goodyear since they had a great rebate program.

I still love my cheap kumho's. There is a bit of noise on aggressive cornering, but other than that, they run near perfect. Also alot more "cushier" than the bridgestones since thier Grand Touring tires

Not all bridgestones suck. Its just the RE92s.

Alot depends on what they tried to build the tire for, and how well they did it. You can make a tire for :

Snow (Snow tires)
Wet (like the hydroedge series)
Dry (most Performance tires)
Cornering (Performance as well)
Noise (Softer tires)
Treadwear (Harder tires)
Ride comfort (Grand touring tires)
Durability (Run-flats)
etc.

Usually if you excel in one, you give up another catagory. Performance tires suck in Snow and usually have worse treadwear and road noise than Grand Touring tires. Runflats arent as comfortable. Snow tires have horrible treadware in the dry. High treadware tires dont typically grip as well. All seasons arent superior in dry, wet, or rain, just acceptable in everything. Its all based on the compound, composition method and tread pattern, but almost without fail, making one aspect better pushes something else down. Its all about getting what suits your driving and maintenance habits best.

I think the RE92 stockies were built for All-season high treadwear, so they suck at all kinds of grip. If I remember right, I ran on them for 3 years without rotation. The Kumhos I recommend are Grand Touring All Season and arent as high treadwear since thier softer, but still very formidable (maybe 2 years, no rotation...yes I'm lazy and I will change my ways once I get new rims). The softer compound means better ride comfort and better grip though, but also makes the sidewalls a bit squishy so you get some road noise in aggressive cornering. If you can compromise a bit lower treadwear, you get better grip and comfort.

Now the Kumhos I recommend are for the person who wants one set of tires all year around and doesnt have a bunch of money to spend. If you got some cash to blow, I recommend getting a set of rims with performance tires for 3 seasons of the year, wrapping your stocks in snow tires, and using them for the winter. It costs more but you get superior grip in all seasons, better treadwear since your using two set of tires in conditions they were respectively built for, and a bit of style during the non-winter months.

After my Potenza's went bald, I opted for the Turanza's. Much better handling and much more quiet. I guess that is why I've seen them on Lexus models.
