Caliper bolt broken

Caliper bolt broken

Postby trioptimum » Mon Aug 22, 2005 9:08 am

Grr... doing my rear brakes yesterday, and the last owner broke the head of the bolt holding the caliper to the support on the rear right wheel ><!!! I asked around and it needs drilled through from the other end to remove it, thus ruining the caliper and maybe the support as well.

The cheapest I could find a Solara caliper online was $230. Any chance these are interchangeable with a Camry's or Avalon's? In any case, anyone know where I can get one (used or new) on the cheap?

Thanks.

Dang man.
Yeah you should look for 98 through 2000 Camry or Solara.
That should work.

Are you guys _sure_ a camry caliper will work? I won't have a problem finding one of those. But no junkyard around here has a Solara.

Goodyear's gunna try to drill it out and save the caliper, but there's nothing sticking out, so they'll probably have to drill through the other end.

Check it out. My 2000 solara SE V6 has camry rear calipers. Found this out the hard way when I purchased a full set of brake pads. The rear pads they gave me were all wrong. Brought in the old rear pads and we matched them to a 2000 toyota camry.

If the camry caliper has different pads I'll stick to Solara calipers then, I already bought (non returnable) nice ceramic pads for the car. Ehh.

I'll check one out on my dads Avalon in the morning and see if it's the same, if he'll let me remove a tire :P. I know for sure his uses the same pads as a Camry.

I found re-manufactured ones for $100... that's the best price I've gotten so far. Anyone know a junkyard with a parts Solara?

Thanks guys.

funny u mentioned that .. last time i need some parts to fix my brakes, i went to a junkyard and they had NO solaras and NO Gen4 Camry's ... but funny thing, they had a 95-96 Camry and the brakes were the same!!! so dont be looking out only for Solaras man... i'd look at every freaking camry they have there.

Did you notice if the pads were interchangeable on the Camry calipers? I'd use a Camry one but not if the pads are different. I guess I could go look today, take one of my new pads with me, and find out :).

I called Toyota, and the part number for the calipers are the same for the Camry and Solara, and he confirmed the pads would be the same on either one. The part numbers for aftermarket ones at AutoZone are the same too.

Picked up a Camry rear one for $40 shipped, just need to get the old one off now ><. Thanks for the help guys.

I've had great success with broken bolts using the Craftsmen drill out/screw out set. And my heavy duty Ryobi corded electric drill I got from Lowes for $20.
