Tranny Problems

perhaps this should be in the "forced induction sections" i'm not sure.

anyways i've had my 99 solara (automatic) since it was new, at 60k i put in the s/c and some basic mods (injen, ik22, wires, jims fuel upgrade, and 5.5 pulley) recently i was driving my car up a hill, and the car wouldn't go anymore. the engine was still running but the gear wasn't moving. now that its' towed to my house, i STILL can't drive it anywhere cuz it just goes in gear and doesn't move, l, 2, reverse, d, none of the gears work. its like the car is always in neutral.

my best guess is something is wrong with the the clutch inside the auto tranny? anybody experienced this before? if so, any suggestions on good shops in the bay area to fix it?

thanks

Could be a torque converter problem. I doubt it's the actual planetary gearsets of your auto tranny because you'd probably hear some nasty grinding noises if it were.

Don't listen to me though. This is just a guess, and I don't know a damn thing about any cars ever. All I do is push my pedal and my car goes. Then, believe it or not my car stops when I push the brake... wow, weird.

But really someone will come along and tell you exactly what's wrong, my 2cents is the torque converter tho, and it doens't seem liek somehtign is slipping cause you're not getting any movmenet at all.

P.S. Did you notice any noises when this happened?

Sounds like you need a rebuild in your transmission. . . This same problem happen my dad's 88 Camry and the mechanic said it's because the gears are slipping so it can't engage. . . Don't take this completely true. . . Just bring it to a local mechanic and see what he thinks is wrong

Automatic.. Did you check to see you have plenty of auto transmission fluid? I remember a car leaked all of his out and the autotrannie couldnt get the fluid running through its converter balancer thing to catch its gear

I think it's better if you get a manual swap than. . . unless Phi can come up with a good deal for you. . . if you're going to stick with auto it will be a good time to get the Custom High Stall Torque Converter and Valve Body Adjustment from IPT. . . :D

You didn't mention whether or not there is any fluid in it. Is it at the right level? Does it look or smell burnt? Before I took it for a megabucks repair, I'd check to be sure it isn't something simple like a shifter problem. Check the shift cable where it attaches to the trans and make sure that it actually is moving the selector arm.

this isn't something lame that has gone wrong.. the tranny is just done im sure.. theres a better chance its a major problem, then a slight issue... Replacing a transmission isn't that much work really... especially for a shop w\ lifes and tranmission lifts etc.. I did mine on the floor of my garage

tranny problems

Postby Gregtrd » Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:18 am

if your tanny fuild is very low your car won't run i know this from experiance, do you know how to check your trans fuild level, its not like checking the engine oil!! turn you car on and leave it on for about 15 minuits and shift from parking thru 1st slowly a couple of time then go check your trans dip stick, if there is no fuild add some, remember when you add fuild you must shift thru all the gear again, if you dont you'll see it full and it not because the fuild it must go thru all the gears. if you see no fuild when you first check it, it'll take about 3 qt.s, make should that you dont over fill it. just keep check the way told you.

if you have no trans fuild may it could be leaking from; oil pan or there some other seals that go on the drive shafts. any how if you need help email me. i my self did a engine swap on my camry from i4 to v6 it more work you guy think. i got it done in a week. i got had a bad trany and swaped it 6hrs so i have a good idea of what is going on.
