Recommendations on replacement tires?

Recommendations on replacement tires?

Postby Stevarian » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:02 pm

I have a 1999 Solara SLE, and I replaced the Michelin energy MXV4 tires 2 years ago with Dunlop SP Sport A2 tires. Well, the Dunlops are getting down to the wear bars after only 23,000 miles, and it is time to buy new tires before the snow flies. I am not happy with the wear these Dunlops gave me.

I just have the stock wheels, and the tires on their now are 205 60 R16 in size.

Any recommendations for replacement tires? Consumer Reports had good things to say about Falken Ziex ZE 512 and Bridgestone Turanza and Potenza tires. Of course the Michelins are up there too, but they are pretty pricey.

I don't drive "hard" on the tires, and I had an alignment when I bought the tires, and keep them rotated.

Thanks!

Steve

Wow, awesome website. Lots of info there. They don't carry the Falken tires though, so no reviews of that tire. That was one of the things I was hoping to get here, was reviews or recommendations of Solara owners.

Thanks for the link!

I have been EXTREMELY satisfied with Yokohama Avid H4's. I have put them on various cars in the family including 14", 15" and 18". When my Michelin's are up after this season I intend on replacing the tires with 16" Yoko H4's. Jon.

AFter having the potenzas and then the Yokohamas, I tried the Goodyear Assurance Tripletread tires and I have to say i'm impressed with them. They are a long lasting tire which I thought would mean less grip since they are harder but they do a good job and in the rain they are better than any previous tire i've had. My 2 cents.

I put some BF Goodrich Traction T/A on mine, and they stick like glue compared to the stock Michelins.

215/55R16, although I've seen ours with 215/60/16

Oh yeah: I'd rather read Consumer Reports than read "Real reports from real consumers" who generally write that something is either the best thing ever, or sucks like a cheap ho.
Fact is, most consumers don't buy 20 different sets of tires (or lawn mowers, or MP3 players or whatever) and test them. CR does.

I do alot of tires at work. I wouldn't get Goodyear or Dunlop both brands seem to like to hop (which means that the car will have a wiggle even if they're balanced right). The Falken Ziex ZE 512 are awesome tires for the money.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

Thanks for the input everyone!

CR said the Falken tires were #1, but it seems I read somewhere (can't find the site) that said that they wear really fast. I wish someone here had some experience wtih these tires!!!

I am by no means a tire expert. I know the OEM Michelins were good tires, and they pretty much lasted the 50,000 miles they were rated for. I like a tire that is quiet, and lasts like it is supposed to. The Dunlops I have now rated highly in CR as well, but they did not last anywhere close to the 50k miles they are rated for. I am just now at 23k.

I am a cheap b*$^&$d, so I don't like buying tires if I don't have to.

The Goodyear triptread tires had some very good comments at Tirerack, but they were not rated in CR.

I guess I don't need a "performance" tire. I want a tire that will be quiet, give me good mileage, and give good traction on wet roads, and work well with a bit of snow.

You might also wish to consider if you want a stiffer sidewall for better handling or a more compliant one for a better ride.
