Worries me..I dont think its slipping though..I mean all my gear grabs...or it seems to..but then when i stall (like driving in one gear up to like 3 to 4K then release the gas pedel but not clutch..Like a way of slowing the car down using the gear) my gear i feel a tug like a bad automatic tranny would do when you nuetral drop gear too much after awhile.. Its that feeling when an automatic shift it tugs into its next gear... is this safe? I mean I feel all my gear grabbing.. I jsut feel that ping tug every now and then driving normally over small bumps (I guess the bump throws the car up alittle or something causeing force making the gear tug show more) or stalls.

Try to find a long hill or upgrade in your area (which might be tough in Dallas/Ft. Worth!). If your clutch is slipping you'll notice that even though you give the car more gas, the power will not be transmitted to the wheels and you'll slow down. It's easier to notice in higher gears.

You will also notice the smell of burnt clutch. My friend was riding with me up a large long hill and we could smell my clutch. He told me my clutch was going bad and 3 months after that it went out.

Car does find (In the right RPM and speed of course) and it has no smelll... Yet it makes the clunk sound when I release the gas pedel or press it again.. I drove other cars (civics was the only ones I could find) and they dont do any of that clunk sounds..

clunk sound?

Postby Sentinel » Thu Sep 15, 2005 5:11 am

Clunk sound like there is play in the tranny? How many miles? Sounds like you have a manual transmission with a bit of play. That is, if you mean when yer drivin, and you go from engine braking to accel quickly (or accel to engine braking) and the car kinda... clunks. You might try new engine mounts, or maybe drive a bit smoother.

If your clutch was slipping, you'd know it. The one time I let a clutch go it took less than a week for the clutch to go from "is it slipping?" to "am I gonna make it home!"

Try the steep hill test, or put it in 5th at a stop and lift up the clutch. The engine should stop immediately.

2000 SLEv6 : Hate automatics, but no clutch to replace.

I have about 80K in it now and 2000 model. I feel no slipping what so ever. Yet there was time when I do accel and releasing quickly..Not like racing or anything.. But like normal driving how your drivng and all the sudden the car in front of you slows down. Well instead lf clutching in and braking I just release the gas and let the car stall slow the car down... How high of a hill are we talking about for slipping. All of my gears grab the moment I release clutch.....

So how do I know if its engine mount or not. It feels more like its coming from the tranny/clutch since I can feel it through the pedal and hear it only when Im pedalling. I even tried clutching in and tap the gas to see what it does. The car revs just fine with no clunk sound nor feeling.. But once I have the clutch release into gear and start driving. I start hearing it again when I pedal tap or release it.. It gets really annoying . Especially when I have people in the car it scares the heck out of me..

clunk

sounds like play in the drivetrain (Although it is very hard to diagnose any car problem 2nd hand) Could be engine mounts, could be CV joints, or any of a number of things between the crankshaft and the tires. I've had numerous manual cars and they all did it to one degree or another once they started gettin' ... experienced.
