Tire/Wheel Size

Postby Jay » Fri Jan 10, 2003 9:30 am

18"s are definitely better than 17"s without compromising too much ride quality.

I admitt 19"s are too extreme and ride quality and drivability will suffer.

Go with 18"s and you won't regret it.

My Mustang came with 17" factory wheels, they weren't big enough, so I got 18"s, then I regretted for not getting 19"s... You know how that goes
-19" Konig Tantrum rims.. Sitting in the garage waiting for tires..
-TRD springs.. Sitting in the garage waiting for struts..
-Conrero aluminium foot pedals.. Sitting in the garage due to my laziness.

I agree Jay I went with 18's and I love them, they look and ride great. I to had a GT mustang also and went one size larger to 18's and it still wasnt enough.

Thanks for all the info JMSinMaryland, and everyone else. I agree, I do like the Verdicts on your car. I don't think I want to go with the Blatants though. I'm looking for a six-spoke wheel rather than seven. I love the look of the Verdicts but want something a little more clean and without the detail lines. I just don't think that would look to good with black. Besides that it's the exact look I want.

I'm really conisering the 18's over the 17's now...since I'll just be using them during the summer and I drive pretty careful most of the time anyways I think they'd be a great choice. Plus every single person here has recommended them as well. I wanted 18's to begin with but wasn't sure if the ride quality would suffer that much. Now I just need to figure out which wheels to go with.

Some recommendations for you for clean quality 6 spoke wheels:

SSR Competition
Volk TE37
TSW Revo (if you really have to)
Konig Rated R

And the list is endless...

Go to Konigwheel.com, they have the Verdicts in black opal as well. Their car of the month is a VW with the Blatants. Jon.

The SSR Competition wheels are actually the best I've seen so far. I just don't want to spend $400 a wheel. Especially if I'll be doing the Tokico/Eibach upgrade at the same time with new tires. The Alessio Sanremo's aren't too bad, and I really like the Blatant's. If I decide to go with a 7 spoke wheel that'll probably be it. Konig has some great looking wheels. I was considering the Rated-R's but don't like em' too much.

Also, the only problem with the Alessio's is that they're 18 x 8. Should I risk going with a wheel this size or stick to 18 x 7.5? I have a feeling I shouldn't go with anything above that.

One more thing- with all these wheels out there should I go with the chrome over the silver painted if there's an option to do so? I don't know how good some of the silver painted wheels look.

i've got the SSR Competitions in 17's and i absolutely love them. yes, they are expensive.....but, they are very strong (i live in north jersey and we've got lots of potholes, i have yet to bend one), and incredibly light. i think the wheels alone weigh 13lbs. with tires they were around 20lbs. after i put em on, i noticed a big difference in acceleration.
i'd say they were worth the price.

Stick with the 7.5" wheel width.

Yeah, I figured I probably shouldn't go over the 7.5 width. Thanks-

Well, the more I looked at some Solara's with the 7-spoke design the more I actually liked it. I've seen two great looking Solara's, both with Motegi MR7's. So now I think I'm pretty much between two wheels. Either the Konig Tantrum ($225 per wheel) or the Motegi MR7 ($175 per wheel).

I'm thinking about going with silver and the only noticable difference between the two are the bolt pattern and about a 5 lb. difference. The Konigs weigh about 23 lbs. while the Motegis weigh 27.5 lbs.

What do you all think? Which wheel would you go with considering build quality, reputation, looks, etc...

I believe Flipside used to have MR7s in gun metal. They looked great. Wonder if he still has them for sale?

Nope not anymore. I sold them to my friend Art a few weeks back. Here's what it looks like on his JDM looking 03 Corolla S:

Here are the new black housing JDM style lights we put on his car last night at my friend's house in San Diego (featuring HID looking 9006 low beam Silverstars!):

Thanks for posting those pics Flipside. I like how those MR7s look. I'm just trying to decide to go with those or the Tantrums. They both look great. I may be leaning towards the Tantrums though.....is it just me or do these two wheels pretty much look identical??? I've seen the MR7s on several Solara's but haven't gotten to see the Tantrums on a Solara.

Do you all think that the Tantrums weighing 5 lbs. less than the MR7s would make any difference?

I actually wanted the Konig Tantrums, but a good deal came up on the Motegi MR7s.

The MR7s are on a lot of cars, which is why I am thinking about getting rid of them and getting something a bit different. my advice, get the Konigs. They are a bit different in how the spokes meet the rim, but for the most part they are the same. Pictures on a car won't help, just the up close detail pics.

I think Konig is a better wheel brand than Motegi. Motegi is somewhat cheap and found everywhere (like Pepboys).
