Low fuel tank -- good or bad?

Low fuel tank -- good or bad?

Postby ericatdallas » Mon Jan 13, 2003 9:29 pm

While I was driving to Colorado with my friends I told them I didn't want my car to have a low fuel tank because it was bad for my car. My instructor at school told me it was b/c the gunk at the bottom of the tank gets into the engine because it overwhelms the filter. I don't know if that's true or not but when I looked in the internet I couldn't find anything on it except a link that suggests that there will be increased vapor and a higher probability of it exploding.

Anyone have an idea? If it's true, a link would be nice too so I can send it to my friend.

hummm...there's something for me to think about it. i push the limit all the time. i'm waiting for the day that i embarrass myself b/c i have to call work for a fuel delivery. (damn..i guess that means i couldn't make fun of customers who run outta gas anymore  )

so does that mean your car can breakdown like it's out of gas before it's actually out of gas?

I never let it get down below 1/4 of a tank. But I usually fill up by a 1/2 :D

yeah, i do that too. i'm always trying to see how close i can get to putting 70 litres (18.5 gallons?) when i fill up. I don't think it's bad unless the car is sitting for a while though.

Usually i'm good about filling it up before the 'fuel light' acts up....Most gas i've ever filled was 18.1 gallons...PHEW THAT WAS CLOSE!!
Missay: Me and my dad once were out of gas in our cressida. We just pushed the car off the road went to the gas station and brought back 2 literes of gas...(to hold us till we drove to the station)...nothing too it...I remember it was like dead if summer 130 F degrees atleast (50C)..A/c was on high...and our walk seemed like forever! Coming back to the topic...yeah..we just added gas..and the motor started again!

You were correct when you said that you suck dirty fuel through the system. I try to never let it go below 1/4 tank, whats the point, gas stations are all, it takes under 5 minutes to fill up and pay, and it still costs you the same amount if you top it off every 25 miles or 250 miles

The merchant gets nailed with the fee for debit cards, not the person :D

I've been told the same thing about fuel injected cars, that it isn't good for them.

My sisters accord and my dad's accord both seem to get much better gas mileage on their first half of the tank than the 2nd. It could have something to do with that bit of overfill, when the indicator is above F, but it seems like it could be more than that though.
