Getting more out of our alternator?

I was wondering what would be the best way to get more amps from our alternator. An idea came to mind that might work, and require no electrical knowledge. How would putting a slightly smaller pulley on the alternator work? It would spin a little bit faster than normal, cranking out more amps right? Would this work? And how and where would we be able to find a pulley that would work?

It might work.
The new Celica's have an alternator belt for the undrive pulley set.

I've never tried anything like that before, but I suspect that putting a smaller pulley on the Alt. will only allow it to make it's max power a bit earlier in the RPM range (I don;t think a normal alt will make max power at idle) but I don't think that it will allow the alternator make more power than it is rated at. That is going to be limited by the construction of the alternator.

There has got to be somewhere you can get a higher output alternator to bolt on, or maybe take it to a re-winding shop and see if they can wind it for more power.

Last note: not only does the killer system weigh more, but the more power your alternator puts out, the less HP to the Wheels!

I've seen one every now and then on ebay, pushing out 120 amps. But I know this would be something I cna do myself, just don't know how. I'm kinda confused as to how putting a smaller pulley on the alternator would cost HP, physically.

If you flicker at idle with a good alternator because of your stereo, then a smaller pulley would help.

A smaller pulley wouldn't suck up any more HP, a bigger alternator pushing more power would. There is no such thing as a free lunch.

Your best bet is to just look for a high output aftermarket alternator.

I got a 200amp alternator from excessive amperage for $430 shipped, works great, still some dimming but not much considering I have a total of 1900 watts RMS, putting a smaller pully on will just kick the alternator on at a lower engine RPM, but doing this on a stock alt. could possibley burn it up when driving at a higher RPM.
