scraped my passenger door. what can i expect for a repaint

Postby hari-bhari » Sun Dec 11, 2005 2:05 pm

so i always park in the basement of our parking deck in the far corner, so as to avoid other cars. normally i park in this spot and get right up close to a pillar so that i can be as far away from the next spot as possible. well as irony would have it, i ended up scraping my own door on that pillar while backing out. the scratches arent deep, but the paint has definetely come off. what am i looking at to get it repainted? will it have to be the whole panel?

^take a pic. it would help to determine since itll tell us whether you need to go to the extent of doing body filler or just a simple buffing.

buffing may be out of the question since you say it isnt "deep", which could also mean its sumwhat deep
dont be fooled though cuz one time i too thought i had scraped off some of my paint but in fact gained some of the other car's paint... so buffing took it out

and if its the door that needs body work, it is recommended to paint the complete door since you wouldnt want to see a patch on your door where it shines out "NEW PAINT" and then another part of your door to be recognized as original paint. most body shops (and from experience) would repaint the entire door... doesnt make sense to just paint a patch

there may be some guys who come out to your house to do the job on your driveway but i dont trust their work.... professional work is the way to go!

but yeah take a pic and ill give you a ballpark of how much youre seeing to spend

If they aren't that bad, you can do a pretty good job with touch up paint and a q-tip to blend in the scratched up parts.

.......but pictures would really help in this case.

Your probably looking at $500. If i read what you're saying correctly, you actually scraped off the paint to the primer or metal. If you are particualr about your car and want it fixed "right", it'll be at least $500 because your entire door should be refinished if you don't want any evidence of damage . If you are willing to take a chance with a airbrush guy or a spot fix, it could be as cheap as $200. However, I had my QX4 fixed by one of those mobile airbrush/paintless dent repair guys, and it sucked. I wish I would have just had it done right the first time, because when I sold my QX4, everyone noticed that damage.

this doesnt "look" too deep... have you tried buffing it out? you most likely have to buff it like a mofo, but it may just work... it doesnt seem like it got as far as its primer

the panel of the door may be an issue though... plastic is tough to repair, unless its sanded down right

Seems like you can buff it out. Go get some turtlewax scratch/swirl should do the trick. If not, should get rid of most of it easily. Good Luck.

Just try waxing it out first. It wouldn't hurt to try a 5 dollar bottle instead before a 200-400 dollar paint job.

Steps

Postby JMSinMaryland » Tue Dec 13, 2005 9:49 am

1. Wash that area of the car with lots of soap to remove any concrete residue.

2. Use a compound (such as turtle wax) in the immediate area

3. If step 2 is sucessful place a coat of wax on top.

Good luck. Jon.

looks like a buff job. Use Maguires "Cutter" polish. Take a lot of time or use an orbital buffer if you can get your hands on one.

the metal and even the paint is stronger then cement. all that crap on your door is cement residue. Kinda like another cars paint if they hit you. It might be scratched a little bit but slightly scratched is much better then spending a couple hundred. Just buff the hell out of it even if it seems impossible.

I had mentioned Maguires "Cutter"...you can try Mothers "Clay Bar" kit too. I love both. They are slightly abrasive to cut out contaminents. If you use the clay bar, use tons and tons of the spray polish it comes with.

I spray smoked my old civic clear tail lights and had massive over spray. I was lazy and didn't take them out  . The clay bar kit scrubbed out all of the over spray.
