tight shift (automatic tranny) HELP!

Hi,

I am new here. I have used the search engine but couldnt really find anything related to my questions.

First, when I took my car to the dealer, he says my shift lever is too tight as in it is not loose like an automatic car should be. I have driven a rental camry before and the shift was so loose compared to mine. Is there a problem and what could it be?

Also my car started to roll when put to 'P' the other day. Took it to several places and they all referred me to go to a tranny shop. I went to AAMCO and the guy also complained about the tight shift. However, he didn't fix it that but did help me with the rolling problem when put to 'P'. Didnt even charge me for that!

Do you guys think I still have a problem with the tranny? The shift stick is still kinda tight.

Also a minor question, how do you check the transmission fluid? Didnt find anything on it in the manual.

Has your car been sitting for a while? I know I had an old maxima that had the same problem...my shifter linkage was tight and maybe a little rusty from sitting. I just pushed the button in and quickly ran the shifter through the gamit of gears while the car was off but ignition on. I wouldn't do this unless you ride has been sitting. If it hasn't probably is a still a linkage problem but you should have it check out my another tranny shop.

Checking tranny fluid- the car should be in park and running. Make sure the car is up to operating temp. This tranny dipstick is red (I think), oil is usually yellow on toyota vehicles. Anyway once you pull the dipstick out you check it just like oil. You'll see the marks on the stick. Make sure the fluid doesn't look too dirty or smell burnt. Unlike a manual tranny lubricated by gear oil that doesn't heat up therefore really never breaks down an auto gets hot and the fluid does need to be changed periodically (every 30K or so they say). I find most people wait a lot longer.
