Camry?

Is the Solara really a Camry at all? From what I heard, there are restrictions on the number of imports that can be made, so a lot of car companies will tag something under the old brand in the interim. So eventually, Toyota will dump the Camry Solara angle and just call it a Solara. Any truth to this?

None what so ever...its not the supra-celica theory...where the celica is now a run off what used to be a sub of the supra!
Solara is (weather you want to belive it or not) a coupe of the camry!!

A lot of it has to do with the sales figures. Honda has the 2 and the four door accord. Without the solara, toyota couldn't claim the number one selling car. Toyota camry (4dr) Toyota Camry Solara (2dr).

Its the same reason why there is the Corolla, and the Corolla Matrix.

Its all about marketing and numbers. Rumor has it in 2004 the Solara will really differentiate itself from the camry, but we'll see.

one of the main reason's that Toyota calls it the "Camry Solara" is to report more sales of Camry's, their best selling car.

as far as related to a Camry, although the Solara shares many of the mechanical and interior components with the camry ('97-'01), the Solara is actually built on a chopped Avalon frame. so, its more of a hybrid between the Avalon and the Camry.

Wrong. The Solara was built on the same exact chassis the Gen4 Camry was. i.e. SXV20 and MCV20. The Avalon however was built off the Camry chassis on a stretched wheelbase...MXC20 for Gen2...or MXC10 for Gen1.

No truth to that at all. The Camry Solara is exclusively built in North America...and only sold in the North American market i.e. US and Canada. It's currently manufactured at TMMC (Cambridge) and later on, production will move to Georgetown Kentucky along with the rest of the Camry, Avalon and Sienna line.

So then, this new Solara 04 that's coming out, would it still be Camry Solara then? And not Solara by its self?

I like Camry and all but I think Solara deserves its own name out there. It's too good to live in a shadow.

It'll still be the camry solara. The camry is not to bad of a car at all to be in the shadow. I read an article a few months ago from when the solara first got introduced. They also made the name camry solara because people associate camry with reliablity and quality. The camry is a great car
