Chrome flaking off grille?

Chrome flaking off grille?

Postby drock03 » Wed Jan 04, 2006 1:39 pm

Not sure if my grille is original or an aftermarket cheapo, but this winter is really taking a beating on it. Chrome stuff is chipping and pealing all over exposing black plastic underneath. I actually liked the "blacked out" look. Anyone know how I can strip off the rest of the chrome? I tried scraping it a little, but I'll be there for hours. There must be a chemical that will loosen the remaining chrome?

Take it to a do-it-yourself car wash and turn the water all the way up--at least that's what I heard (do bear in mind that there aren't any commercially-available aftermarket grilles for our cars)

I painted mine black. Just sanded the chrome off with sand paper, Then I wet sanded the dull part to get some of deep scratches out. Then put 3 coats of primer. 4 coats of black paint. and 3 coats of clear. Turned out good. Oh I also cover up the grill area the part already black with masking tape in order to keep runs from occuring in that area.

Parden my spelling, but I used duplicolor selfetching primer. Its a dark green, Then for the black and clear I used duplicolor acyrlic enamel. They are all automotive paint. I got them at advanced auto parts. You can also get them at autozone too.
