help, brake problem

help, brake problem

Postby captainpimp » Thu Jan 05, 2006 6:09 pm

this morning as i left for work my car felt as if the brakes were being applied even though i wasnt touching them. i think it's the front right brake, it seemed hotter than the rest. i drove a 1/2 mile to pick up a friend, realized it was jacked up so we took his car to work. about 6 weeks ago i replaced the rotors and pads but havent had any problems since them. car is a 99 w/ 71k on it. i will look at it this weekend, anybody got any ideas??? thx in advance.

Sticky Brake

Postby Sentinel » Thu Jan 05, 2006 7:09 pm

Jack the front end, car in N and see how hard your wheels are to spin. It should not be hard at all.

If sticking: I would guess a brake cylinder (on the rotor) as a master cylinder would cause both sides, or maybe all 4 brakes to stick.

Also: There might be some ABS tomfoolerey involved, but I don't know much about that stuff.

Another option: Wheel bearings.

I'll go along with xSolarax, caliper piston stuck/binding. You can either rebuild it yourself or get a replacement or remanufactured. Remanufactured are fun, you install them, they leak, you return them for replacements and reinstall, repeat process. After awhile you can do them in your sleep.

what causes the caliper to stick? what has to be rebuilt?
is it a mileage related failure or an unexpected quirk?
