Valve Cover Gasket

Valve Cover Gasket

Postby RichD978 » Sat Jan 07, 2006 3:02 pm

well jsut got back from the dealership. They sort of did a free inspection for me. I had oil leaking from the engine and I asked them to check it out. They found out the Valve Cover Gasket needs to be replaced. $105 installed. Isn't the Valve cover the black part that says v6 with the toyota emblem? How can that be the problem when the leak is under the spark plug area? Any feedback or comments. Anyone else encounter this?

Nope.....that's just a decor piece that covers the ignition/coil wiring. the valve cover is the piece where there's an oil cap and where the spark plugs go through. hope this helps

Gasket is where your engine had all that black stuff you showed me. If i was you id just buy the gasket and do it yourself if your mechanically inclined.

the valve cover Gasket is a 20 dollar part for a Non-Toyota OEM match for the 4cyl. Its the black rubber part that goes between the valve cover and the main engine block. For the V6, I think theres two valve covers due to 2 banks of cylinders, so probably needs two valve cover gaskets.

I Bought one but never changed it, it was causing oil to leak into the top part of my sparkplugs...I never went to change it thought because it doesnt really have any negative affects since the 2nd set of seals between the plugs and the cylinders was still keeping oil out.

For the 5SFE 4cyl, its takes taking out the 4 spark plug tubes, unscrewing the spark plugs, and loosening the 4 bolts inside holding the valve cover on. Not sure about the 6cyl. Probably alot harder though due having 6 cylinders, and difficult access to the rear bank of plugs.

105 w/ labor doesnt seem too off.

When my v/c/gaskets from the dealership costed me close to 130 (that was after a 10% off with coupon pricing), so yours is a better price than i paid for my imzfe.
