Engine Light Reset?

Engine Light Reset?

Postby FreakinJARED » Fri Jan 13, 2006 8:02 pm

So in an act of pure jeenyus  , I left my gas cap at the gas station and went about ~50 miles before the notorious "engine light" turned on.

I already forked cash to buy another cap, and I don't want to pay to have that light reset...

My friend recommended d/cing my battery for about 15 minutes to reset the light. Does anyone know if this'll work? or if you have any other suggestions to swing over, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Taking off the negative battery terminal will reset your ECU, and any CEL's. The length of time those CEL's are reset for is up in the air, they may come back immmediately... or they may not. I'm sure it's all relative.

Best way - Go to an Autozone and get them to "check the CEL (check engine light) code" and clear it for you. They should do this service for free.

Disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes should also clear the CEL, but unsure if this actually clears the instance of the code from memory. I think it does, but using a scantool like they have at AZ definitly clears it from memory.

Anytime you have a CEL for something dumb (like leaving the fuel cap off) just drive it. it should reset after 3? drives as long as there's no problem.

However: OBD-II scanners are the shiznit. I've had my CEL come on on 2 occasions for B/S, i've cleared the codes, and they havn't come back. (If you're like me and can't stand any trouble lights, even if you know they're bunk)
