TRD supercharger and open air intakes...

Postby Syndicate » Thu Jan 30, 2003 7:05 pm

...I don't drive a Solara, but I am planning on adding a TRD supercharger to my 1ZZ-FE powered Toyota. However, I've noticed that most of the engines w/blowers available don't like open air intake systems, is the same true of the Solara V6? Anyone have an AEM, Injen or whatever on their V6 Solara...any issues? Thanks in advance.

Intake

Postby ScottV » Thu Jan 30, 2003 7:48 pm

I have an Injen intake on mine and haven't had any problems. The ones that do have problems usually have a bolt loose somewhere (from what i've seen on other forums)

...I drive a '03 Corolla S 5-speed, I post at newcelica.org as well (under the same name). The TRD blower is supposed to be released mid to late spring, but I wanted use an AEM cold air intake w/it. However, I've seen issues w/other TRD superchargers not really seeing any benefit from open air style filters (Tacomas and Tundras mainly). I've been reading Camryman.org since before the TRD blower was available and once it was and people started purchasing the unit it didn't seem like many people were using AEM or Injen style intakes.

Long Time

The reason most of us don't use intakes on our vehicles is b/c they are short stack intakes which reduce power by allowing more hot air into the engine. Obviously, we who are supercharged care about power and the additional noise doesn't equal power and as aforementioned reduces it. Maybe when a CAI is developed you'll see most of us upgrading to it. I personally won't because I enjoy my car being quiet even with a cat-back exhaust. BTW finished school and in job market. =). Jon.

...thanks for explanation Jon, I didn't realize a CAI wasn't available for the V6 Solara...I guess you're using the TRD air filter then (which you can only hear if you listen for it)s Are CAIs really that loud? I've never really heard one. Congrats on school and so forth.

One main reason I wouldn't put a regular short ram intake back on my car is because 1) it runs extremely rich and 2) sucks in hot air i.e. loss of torque and performance. For a S/C'ed application, hot air along with the excessive heat the S/C builds up is not a good thing. It would be optimal to run a CAI or just stick to the stock airbox with a K&N drop in or similar.

Do you frequent VVTi.net or 2003Corolla.org? Perhaps you've seen my friend Arturo's (KitsuneR2ro) 03 Corolla S?
