Hey guys.... i'm the newbie here & had a quick question lookn for opinions & we all KNOW what they are like but I figure you guys may know best !!! My wife is the proud owner of a 2000 5spd V6 Solara leather & the works..... she's a good driver above average..... she also has a 2000 CBR honda 600 motorcycle that she rides on the track when I go to practice for my racing... jus to give you an idea of her level...... (slightly agressive) Yes she wants the supercharger.... unfortunately she was in a jet ski accident a few months back & will have problems shifting for a while (smashed elbow) I want to surprise her with a newer car & wanted opinions on the 01-03 V6 Solara Convertible automatic..... does it run like the manual..... are there any changes that need to be done or is it the same car jus automatic..... this question may sound weird but I'm jus not used to having an automatic..... hopefully I'll get some GOOD opinions then I'll go back into my hole!!!!!

Thanks......

It'll be a cooler car to be seen in since it's a convertible, I think it being auto and a convertible will have it's advantages. But since it's an auto it will feel slightly slower, but not that drastic. You'll have a 4speed auto instead of a 5speed manual.

I think it would be great to have both a Converible SLE V6 auto and a SE V6 manual in the family.
If you do decide on buyin the Conv. SLE you would have made a good
decision.

like they said, the auto will feel different but still has plenty of power to satisfy. the last car i had was a 5-speed, i was reluctant to buy an auto but once i saw/drove my current 99 solara, i quickly changed my opinions of auto trans. im sure, like most cars, the solara would be more fun with a 5-speed, but you and your wife should be surprised/happy with the auto. hope your wife makes a quick recovery and wish her the best.

You are right that the convertible will be heavier, but for racing/ better shift reliability, the auto is better. It is better to have an auto when you have a quick car. It will always be the same unlike a manual, you just need to tweak it to make it quicker when shifting

why do the russians always ruin the party? J/K . the conv. is heavier however i dont think it'll make a huge difference. you will however notice a difference in cornering, the conv. is less rigid so it might take sharp turns differenly than the coupe.

I have and 06 v6 convertible and let me tell you, it moves. If you step on the gas, it revs up into the 5s on the tach and takes off. Plus, you have the option of manually shifting (on the 06 at least) if you really want to.

And my conv. takes turns just fine too...now if you want to take a corner at 60, no, but just fine.

LOL

Sorry i'm not from cali so I'm not a fan of convertibles. There are 10 days in year you can put the top down, other days it's either too cold or too hot. And they slower, too. Don't get me wrong I would like to have one if I could drive it with top down and if it was brand new. But used convertible in CT is NO NO. :)

Yeah the suto would be nice.
But the 5 speed would be more fun.
Yeah S/C will make things even more fun for both Solara platforms. :D
Hope your wife has a speedy recovery.

If she's into racing and has already had the 5spd and you're going to stick with the 3 liter engine... she is going to HATE auto.. it has nothing like the pickup her car already has. I would upgrade to the generation 2 (04-06) in an auto if you're goijng to have to go with the auto because it'll move out. Although I guess supercharging the old auto would be a good option too, the gen 2's have almost no aftermarket support so if you're going that route looking to mod she'll be SOL.

I just realy think that despite shifitng situations she'll be disappointed with the auto vs the manual in the older solaras... 136 whp vs 157 whp (and the fun of 5spd) Having owned both I say stick with a 5spd if at all possible, and if her shifting scenario won't allow that, then get a gen 2 auto... it would be more fit as a relaxed daily driver that still has some nasty get up and go and she'll still have her 600 for when she wants to race.

The Solara V6 has 225 horsepower, not 136 or 157!
