My LED Gauge Cluster...

My LED Gauge Cluster...

Postby SolaraGuy22 » Thu Feb 23, 2006 10:47 pm

As you know I bought another cluster so I could experiment. Well here is what I have so far. I have to reangle some of the blue LED's to blend a little better but so far I'm happy.

I gotta ask, how did you get your needles to light up so nice?
I bought a needle light kit on ebay a couple of years ago and I'm not too happy with them. I hand to pop off my needles and sand off the orange backing. Now my fuel gauge isn't too accurate and I'm not 100% on the speedometer. And after all of this time, only 2 needles light up.
I need to correct this.

that looks gorgeous! that color scheme is all over today's luxury cars.... good choice.

If you can make the light consistant, then this will be the best interior modification I've seen yet on this forum!

Okay, I have to confess. It's a BS gauge.

I started the project and like Josh said when he worked on his, it's almost impossible to make it look like the Maxima one... http://www.solaraguy.org/viewtopic.php?t=22189

I got a little frustrated and just decided to make it for show. I tore it all up so it doesn't work it's only cosmetic. I have probably 20+ LED's in there to make it glow. Nothing but the faces, needles, and the housing is what you see. I figured when I wanna go to a show or something I can pop my working one out and throw this in there.

For those who want to do it though, take it from Josh and I who have done it. Don't unless you have mad skills otherwise you're gonna mess your cluster up. Stick with changing the 194 bulbs and keep it clean.

Like how I gave myself a full tank of gas though? :D

Thanks for the comments, it was a cheap like $30 experiment.

well my camera isnt taht great so it looks really uneven. I couldnt find the finished gauge pic but this is a comparison or different bulbs/LEDs I had installed in there when I was deciding on which route to go.

Image

From left to right:
Regular bulb w/o green cover, Matrix 5led, Both middle My custom LEDs that I made from 194 housings, Far right is an a Piia plasma white bulb...
as you can see, from comparison of a regular uncovered bulb, the LEDs I made are so bright that they make the needle glow like crazy. I just decided to try them out with the two middle 194 slots here and currently made them for the rest of the 194 slots (5 custom LED's total) I just bought some blank bases and used some tiny LED's I bought, soldered them together and carefully picked the angles.

Castro- I like the way the needle turned out in that pic. Can't wait to see the finished product tho.
