trading gen1 sola to corolaXRS

I have driven a 03 Corolla CE before, the handling is very predictable, and the whole car feels stable during high speed.

I have to agree that the XRS is gonna be at best high 15s. Better than the auto V6, but not the 5spd.

I don't see how anyone can say at best high 15's when most people who own them and test them do low to mid 15's. Even mid range drivers can get this car in to mid 15's.

Show me where your getting low 15s from????? It does 0-60 in high 7s, and that doesnt equal a low 15 second car? Celica Gts does low 15s and that weighs barely anything.

karma wrote:XRS is underrated. Most members do 150whp +- a couple horses (dynoproven) so no way are they only losing 14hp through the drivetrain.

Also, the XRS doesn't do 16's, i don't know where you got that from. C&D have it down for 15.4 and a few drivers on 9thgen forums have gotten lower in the 15's at stock. Adding an intake and exhaust helps out tremendously. If you think an SC only puts it a little faster your smokin. SC alone is estimated 230 hp, thats additional 60 horses on a car that weights only 2500lbs. It makes a BIG difference. Also, you are not taking in to account the perfect gearing of the transmission to the motor. I don't see how you can say a gen1 auto is about the same speed

Ok, Karma... it's time to put up or shut up... I asked for your sources, not more hacked up bullshit. I want VALID, LEGIT sources, not crap found on some random fool's website who thinks he can beat a Lambo with a stock Civic DX...

If you don't wanna read the whole articles, I've conveniently placed the information under the links...

http://www.modernracer.com/toyotacorollaxrs.html
7.6s to 60, 15.8s to the quarter...

http://www.import-heaven.net/specs_toyo ... _xrs.shtml
0-60 in 8 seconds...

http://www.corolland.com/corolla/corolla-xrs.html
"Car & Driver got 7.1, and we suspect ordinary people will find 7.5-7.8 to be the ordinary range ".. This is one of the quicker ratings claimed (the 7.1s), however it still doesn't beat the flat 7s most people rated the Solara Gen1 V6 Manual... let alone the Gen 2...

http://www.dragtimes.com/Toyota-Corolla ... -5893.html
A legit drag slip from a stock 2005 XRS, 16.089s to the quarter...

http://www.automedia.com/2005/Toyota/Co ... 041001cx/1
0-60 in the HIGH 7s range

http://www.engine-power.com/toyota/2005 ... a_xrs.html
Places it at 7.1s 0-60, but STILL a 15.8s quarter...

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_attr ... body=Sedan
0-60 in 7.8s

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Spec_ ... -1&src=VIP
0-60 in 7.5s, the quarter in 15.96s...

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sed ... price.html
Okay, Motortrend gave it a 0-60 in 7.1s and a 15.4 second quarter... this is the ABSOLUTE LOWEST I've seen the Corolla XRS given (combined 0-60 and quarter)... BUT... How is this faster than EITHER SOLARA when Motortrend also gave the Gen1 V6 Manual a 7 second 0-60, and tested the Gen 2 Solara at 6.8 seconds???? Supposedly they even went back and did a follow-up test on the Gen 2 V6 and got 6.6 seconds out of it!! I can't varify the 6.6s, but if my mad mathematical skills still exist AT ALL I'd say 6.8 is less than 7.1.. as is 7!

If you want more, I'll give you more dude... but don't bother unless you can back up what you're saying (I'm tired of people making empty claims)...

Those are just basic "standard" times. Of course if you have a driver knowing what they're doing. The 7.5 sec or 15.96 sec could be a little less.

As for the bad handling stated above, toyota's stock tires suck. Plus you can't compare a CE or LE to a XRS. It's a whole different car with the same body.

Either way these 2 cars are in entirely different classes. You can enjoy your v6 now but when you get your XRS, have fun with the lift.

Hey 3511,

only one way to find out. Theres a corolla meet in burlington next Sunday. You can either race a XRS (if he's up for it, probably is) or a SCed Corolla S. I'll bring a camcorder and Maybe you can even put your money where your mouth is? Let me know. If you're down I can arrange a "closed course"

Thank you Prodigy.
Rich im not going to put money on a race that could go either way, im not that confident. For all i know my car could be doing 0-60 in the 8s. Id race him for fun, but Burlington might be to far for me. What time is it being held?

1. It takes more skill to make corolla go fast.
2. chicks dig solara
3. in a case of collision of solara with corolla, solara will owned corolla
4. in the world of sports compact car fans: Corolla XRS > Solra

but in the world of general public: Solara > corolla

5. fuel consumption: corolla >> solara
6. chicks capacity: solara >>>>>>corolla

i ve found the base corolla to have sketchy high speed handling. its fine on staights but if you get into the turns at high speed there is too much lean, and up and down movement. the front end moves at different rates than the rear creating yaw as well as up/down movement. luckily, there is enough lean and low grip in the tires that you slow down before it flings off the road. so in a way it is predictable and only stable on straights or med speed corners. in the xrs, the whole suspension and body is much more controlled and you can get into turns and can control oversteer and understeer. kinda like the diff betw solara with and without trd rsb and springs but because the corolla is much lighter, is has sharper feel.

screw if I lived up there I'd go at an XRS, I'd even take off my CPE intake and the tune it comes with to race an XRS stock for stock and put my money where my mouth is. Yes I do believe they'll take an auto Gen 1 V6, but I'll put serious money down on my car stock beating any stock Corolla. HP at the wheel on my car stock being slightly under the XRS at the crank and only weighing 600 lbs. more I'll take my chances. There's just no way an NA 1.8 liter 4 banger in full street trim and weight can stack up against a 3 liter that doesn't weigh a ridiuclous amount more. Maybe I should hunt down an XRS to test this theory, too bad I've only ever seen one around.

As previously stated... I've taken 3 of them with ease in my Gen 2 before I got my intake... If you want to get technical, I am probably SLOWER than stock considering I have around 150lbs+ of audio equipment and heavy 18"s... One was dropped and had cat-back and intake...

I'd definitely put my money where my mouth is... oh, wait, but then again I would have already won it back three times over...

I don't know why i have to defend myself in front of you. If anyone says anything great about solaras on the 9thgen forums everyone else praises that car because it is a fellow toyota. Sorry that there isn't this kind of brotherhood on this forum.

Nyyankees3511 wrote:Show me where your getting low 15s from????? It does 0-60 in high 7s, and that doesnt equal a low 15 second car? Celica Gts does low 15s and that weighs barely anything.

To be exact, XRS only weighs in at 170lbs more and around 10hp less. Not that far off.

Theprodigy79 wrote:

First off, your links couldn't even get the information right, one stated that the Solara V6 was an XLE. Small discrepency, but lets you know who you are dealing with  .

Second. Look at you motortrend link and it shows you everything you need to know. I'm not talking about the 1/4 mile time, yes it is the lowest you can find at 15.4, i'm talking about the rolling speed acceleration times, the XRS destroyed the competition between cars in the same class on that spec. My point is that the XRS doesn't have torque at all, just 120 ftlbs, it was made for TOP END revving. This is something that the Solara cannot TOUCH. The 1mz is an "F" head and cannot even attempt to flow as well as the "G" head on the 2zzge so you wouldn't understand. YOu may get the lead off of the line, but the minute the engine reaches its power band it hauls that light car to redline with ease and engaging a larger cam profile along the way as well as variable valve timing.

Third, your car weighs in at 600lbs more and not that much more horses!! The 1mz only makes ~210hp at the crank. I"m sorry but only 40hp more cannot make up for an additional >600lbs especially with an autotragic made for commuting. Now the 5 speed Solara can put down some serious numbers and will beat an XRS, but not by that much. It would be a drivers race.

Fourth, XRS has a tranny built especially for the top end. It is made to rev the sh!t out of the 2zzge. This is something that cannot be said for the 1mz's transmission and gearing.

Fifth, you want links to timeslips here:

http://www.9thgencorolla.com/forums/vie ... hlight=xrs

You will see actual timeslips from people with both SC's and XRS's.

Sixth, proof that the 2zzge with SC is not just a minor upgrade:

http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=207162

The XRS w/ sc will be getting dyno tuned at the beginning of April. If you PM me around that time i'll make sure i get you the link to their numbers as well. If you want to say that a more than 40% increase in power at the WHEELS will only net you a couple tenths of a second off of your 1/4 mile time than we'll see who needs to put up or shutup then.

Seventh, about the corollas you beat with your car HOW ABOUT you show ME some videos because i'm calling Bullsh!t. I want to make sure they weren't S's or CE's or LE's which as i've said before are slow. I'm not fronting on that part.

Eighth, why is everyone downing the guy for wanting to buy an XRS, its better than switching over to a Civic or buying a mazda 3 or something. Atleast it is still a toyota! Geez, am I the only one that has actually pretty much stuck to Toyotas for the numerous cars I have bought? I know a good car company when i see one.

9th, I never said the XRS was superior to the Solara. They are different cars. All i wanted to do was point out MISINFORMATIOn about a sleeper car. I have to agree with the post earlier about Solaras being more of a chick magnet, and having more room for them to fit in. My point was merely don't down a car that you know jack sh!t about other than what you read  [/quote]
