MY 0.02 cents

Postby JMSinMaryland » Mon Apr 10, 2006 3:15 pm

I had my Solara dropped, then rims, then bodykit (within a week). I kept my 16" for winter and had 18" for summer. I personally think the drop with 18s would have been enough, it gave it a nice VIP look. I would NOT get springs without struts, you'll pay for labor 2x when your struts blow. They are tuned to work with your original springs, the lower springs will put additional stress on them. I went with Eibach (TRD)/Tokico blue on both the Camry and Solara. Jon.

Thanks for all the great help. I'm worried bout the price. I can handle the cost of just springs--Adding struts to the equation is too much, though. Is installation difficult? I have a friend who worked in an auto shop for a while so he would be able to help me, but if I need professional installation that just adds on to the price.

Do it on your own is the best way, just because it's cheaper and you get to learn the bits and pieces of your car.

I started this a while back:
http://www.solaraguy.org/viewtopic.php? ... +strut+trd

I'm currently on almost 33-35K miles on the setup as described in the link. And might i add to the critiques....STILL GOING STRONG! Something i've always known from my celica days....yes struts are a nice addition, but eibach's (trd's) are soo small of drops (1.2'-1.5) that stock struts can actually handle this. I'm proving a lot of critiques wrong. I'm not saying this is the way to go about it...all i'm saying this is an option. I know when my struts go..i will need new ones, right now i've delayed my strut purchase by almost year and half (35K miles)...that is extra pennies towards my mortgage/property taxes....etc.

If it's stock and lowered to that effect, how much does it change the overall ride quality? I'm the type of person that likes a smooth-riding car but likes good handling (especially since my SenCrap had a slightly bent rim in the back with an already-too-stiff suspension). So far I don't have the thousand dollars needed to change everything either (but I'm planning on ASA's with Falkens).

imo.....having stock struts on lowering springs is okay to a certain extent. I've been on my stock struts and Eibach (TRD) springs for almost 75K and they're riding fine still. yeah it does make sense to change out yer struts when installing new springs. but if yer on a budget, and yer struts aren't that worn out, I'd say just go with springs for now and then save up for struts later. yes it means doing the job twice and a bit more money.
