Removing Chrome on grille....

Removing Chrome on grille....

Postby jay9170 » Wed Apr 19, 2006 5:56 am

The chrome on my grille is chipping so I was going to remove it all and just have a black grill. I have heard that EZ-Off oven cleaner will remove chrome from plastic. Has anyone tried to do this on their grille?

Thanks

yo bro, try using SEARCH. there's some old threads on this topic.

i think it's like 320 grit. Use sandpaper to get it off. then just primer and repaint it black

Just found this thread saying brake fulid works http://www.solaraguy.org/viewtopic.php? ... c&start=15

If thats the case then I wouldn't have to repaint it. I would use brake fluid to get it off then power wash it. Any idea how the black grill would look on a black car but keeping the chrome emblem in the middle. Or should I just do emblem black too?

it'lll look good. but i'm not sure about the chrome emblem... try it out if you don't like the chrome just do it black

i tried the brake fluid method and that didn't work too well for me. Sanding it was really easy

I didnt even bother dechroming the whole thing. I just did a light sanding, primed over what was there, and painted over

i used 220 to get most of the stuff off, and then 800 to get it very smooth. Then go to walmart and get the Krylon Fusion paint(the stuff that paints plastic) and give it a few light coats of that, then get the Truck/SUV clearcoat rattlecan from your local autoparts store and do about 5 coats of that. It'll be shiny as hell and will last a long time. I taped off the toyota symbol since it was still nice and bright, and i think it looks good.

Did you sand the inside vertical slats part which is already black to scuff it up for the paint to stick? Do you have any pics of your grill completed?

ok, great appreciate it. Did you mask the middle off at all or just the toyota emblem. So I guess I am asking did you paint the middle also just not sand it at all. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

nice. I just finished sanding now. Looks like you spryed the whole thing including the middle, correct? Si I will just mask the emblem. You didn't have to rough up the middle surface at all?

unless you have 4 hours to spend on the middle, i wouldn't worry about it. That krylon fusion paint works really well on plastic and will stick. Just spend some decent time masking off the middle if you wish to keep it chrome.
