Gas Door

Gas Door

Postby Mr_Chunks » Sun Apr 23, 2006 10:11 am

My gas door unlocks with a pull of the lever but doesnt pop open. I think the spring that usually does it is broken or missing. Is this an easy fix or how do I go about doing it?

Uh oh, new car and a problem. At least it's not a bad one. Did you buy the car from a dealer or person? If bought from a dealer, I'd take it back and ask them to fix it.

I'm not sure how hard it would be to fix, but it wouldn't seem to hard, if the spring was the problem and if you were pretty good at fixing things.

It's an easy fix. Open the gas door, and towards the hinges, there should be a black piece of metal about 1/2" that is folded. Providing that it didn't snap off (but is just flattened), you can open up that piece of metal with a screwdriver. If it is snapped, you might have to get it replaced.

Thanks for the tip
Yeah I know, first hour out with the car and I find out about the problem, needless to say I was pissed. I bought the car from a used car lot so they probably wouldnt fix it. In the event that the metal piece is gone where can i buy one? Just toyota dealerships?

I took a look and found that little spring thing metal piece. I bent it out some more in hopes that it would retain its springiness but it just didnt even work. It seems that there is a shelf or something its supposed to catch on to but doesnt. I'll post a pic of it later on to show you what im talking about. =[

I've had this problem on my Camry before (gen4). It was eazy to fix myself, but my fixing didn't last long..it seemed to occur everytime. My quickfix (when really low on gas) was wifee pulling the leaver and me sliding the door open with my credit card at the same time. Under extended warranty, they replace the "u"shaped thing that pop's the door. I'm sure that part won't cost you more than 12-15 bucks at a dealership!
