First 2 Major Problems....

First 2 Major Problems....

Postby Mr_Chunks » Mon May 01, 2006 12:33 pm

A week after I buy the car and take delivery, my first 2 major problems arise....

1 - under light pressure braking there is a squeak, not a constant one, one thats on and off. The consistency of it matches the tire rotations ( 1 bad area on rotor? ), and then under medium pressure braking there is a wierd grinding noise accompanied by my brake pedal having a slight bounce. That too is on and off but it doesnt match the tire rotations. Finally under hard braking ( race ) my brake pedal will suddenly sink and my brakes sound like theyre just rubbing, not actually braking. It sounds absolutely horrendous.

2- Everyday when I get to my car and start it white smoke shoots out the exhaust. Smells like old gasoline. Some days its alot more. ( Usually if I've been racing or driving fast the previous night itll be more )

Any ideas or should i just get to my mechanic ASAP

Sounds like uneven wearing of the rotor for whatever reason. I'd get them, as well as your pads inspected.

The pedal sinking to the ground sounds like your low on brake fluid, or the brake lines werent bled correctly.

New pads, resurfaced rotors, and bleeding the brakes may solve all these issues.

White smoke, with a slightly blue tint, is a telltail sign of oil burning into the exhaust, which means you have an oil leak somewhere.

Check your oil levels to make sure your not running low (If so, get it filled), and have a mechanic inspect for an oil leak.

I got the car from a second hand dealer in El Monte, CA. He had no repair records or anything for the car but I brought a freelance used car inspector with me and he said the car was all 100% good.

As far as the smoke goes it doesnt have a blueish tint, its all white.

all white means condensation.. which isn't an issue.. blue tint that smells is burning oil, which is bad

Its ALOT of white though
and it smells like gasoline
not oil

my mechanic said its condensation, too. But ive never seen so much come out from just condensation.

I checked my oil level today. Its kinda like the color or dark honey. It goes up to the marked line and doesnt smell bad.

The grinding/squeaking noise is probably brake pad related.

White smoke could mean a bad head gasket.

you think too much. The squak noise could be caused by a metalic brake pad or missing brake pad shim. The white smoke just condensation. if you see the white smoke while you floor the car hard, than your head gasket is bad

My guess on the brake squeak is that they replace the pads before and didnt turn down the rotors. I would turn down the rotors and see if that gets rid of the problem. It doesnt cost that much either. If you feel any vibrations or pulsating when you hit the brakes your rotors could be warped and that may cause some squeaking. If thats the case then you have to replace your rotors. Also if you get them turned down the shop will probably tell you if the rotors are warped. So Id just get them checked that way.

On second thought, I just read your post again and it sounds like the rotors are warped.

theres zero smoke when I floor it and keep it planted
i had my friend follow my car and check
and the brakes seem to work okay. The pedal bounces but then again so does the wheel. I think my left rear tire is unevenly worn ( crappy tires from dealership ) but thats soon to be taken care of when I pick up my rims. =]

Ill probably have my mechanic double check just to make sure after the rims swap. Thanks for the input guys

^^ when your pedals or steering wheel shakes its probably the rotors. i just had mine turned down/new pads because of the steering/pedal vibrations. much much much better now. also, like you said, it could be uneven tread on the tires. have your mechanic check it out. most likely an easy fix.

If your pedal and steering wheel are shaking when you hit the brakes it really sounds like your rotors are warped. Id have them checked.
