should i get an bodykit?

should i get an bodykit?

Postby kamikazi » Thu May 04, 2006 7:36 pm

well... since TRD lip kit is so freaking hard to find and it cost 2x for an bodykit should i just get an bodykit? i live in Iowa and we have winter over here (just for you guys that don't know) so i don't know if i want to take my chance with an bodykit considering it will be hard on the car during the winter.

Thanks.

why will it be hard on the car in wintertime?
if you get an aftermarket kit though anticipate some time in the body shop as it will have to be fabricated to your vehicle.

if you're going with a full kit, JF racing has a Duraflex kit that looks promising. you can find them on ebay. type in: "Solara body kit"

^^^^ what they said, get ready to shell out a lot of cash to get fiberglass done right. Personally I would buy the skirts and the rears cause they are least likely to break (fiberglass) and then use an accord lip, ect. and get it custom mounted the the front for a new look. I dont think its been done with the solara yet but a few have done it with camrys with decent results. it all depends on the money you want to spend. Just do it right the first time so you wont regret it later.

Speaking from experience, no fiberglass kit will be cheaper than the TRD. I feel I got a deal when I bought, installed, and painted the kit for just over $5000. If you're patient, someone here will sell a full TRD kit, or you could even piece it together. Just remember, if you want a big side skirt (like the black widow), you'll never be able to get your car on any lift at any dealership or most service places. They can't put it on a lift w/o crushing the skirts. IMO, if you really want the look, get a fiberglass front and rear, then add TRD sides.

Boy Ricer

Postby JMSinMaryland » Fri May 05, 2006 10:35 am

No offense, but to me the Solara fixed up with suspension, supercharger, etc is more of a Gran Turismo vehicle than a boy ricer civic. Besides the TRD kit I have never seen another kit that keeps the classy/expensive look of the vehicle without making it look like every other ricer out there. Jon.

With my Solara bodykit the car was too low for jacking up with the scissor jacks if I ever got a flat. It would start to bend the sideskirts (luckily I never got a flat). The Camry is a bit higher so I don't have the same issue. Jon. p.s. my Solara lowered with 18s would have been fine if I didn't get the TRD kit.

No offense, but are you sure you're putting it in the right place? If you look about 4-5 inches from your wheels, you'll notice 2 notches, which you should place it between the 2 notches. Unless I'm mistaken, at that point the car is going to be held by your car's chassis frame and not the body and determined by Toyota engineers as the best balancing location, because I cannot even begin to picture as to why that'll even happen with everything when jacked correctly.

Besides, if what you said was the case, the body would also begin to bend, which by the time your car is in a position to put the spare on, you'd have a noticable warp that leaves you wondering if something hit your car the next morning.

id go with the TRD kit, to me.. it's worth it .
where many hate, few will love,
But for those who love,
they'll see what it's like to live.

Bodykit

Postby JMSinMaryland » Mon May 08, 2006 7:03 am

Nefarious, I'm sure. With the TRD suspension and the factory jacking points, the scissor jacks do not work without bending the sideskirts. Someone else with the same setup should try it and see. Jon.
