Bad springs?

Bad springs?

Postby redkysolarase » Sun May 07, 2006 6:40 pm

I put some new struts on my car just last week because the rear ones were shot and I thought they were the reason for my little issue but it didn't fix it. Whenever I have someone sitting in the backseat and I go around a turn at a certain speed or even some hills the car acts like it bottoms out in the back. I thought that was because it was bad struts but with the new ones on there it still does it. I bought monroes all around. Yeah I know I should of got tokicos or something else but my car has basically turned into a family car with my fiance and baby so I don't care anymore sad to say. I'm now thinking it may be the springs? Also I have a vibration in the steering wheel around 50-65 mph. I had a front end alignment and the shop said the rear didn't need it. So I'm thinking either a bent rim cause I do have some curb rash on them or tire issues. If you guys can give me some more points I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Bryan

What kind of tires are you running? Have you had them balanced recently? Did the shop check all your front end parts, tie rods, ball joints, ect? Alot of Hunter alignment machines give really snazzy print outs, see if they can get you one. Bad alignment shouldn't directly case vibration 55-65 is generally an indicator of unbalanced tires, but it could be a cupping issue, slipped belt, bent wheel ect...

Struts generally damper the ride, springs have more affect on the ride height.

On the strut, check your bumpstops. And the tires, check the balance.

the balance of your front tires are off. Probably the rear too if rear passengers feel it through their seats.

springs dont usually go bad...not the oem ones at least. But after 100K they do get soft.

Except on Fords, the mid-nineties Taurus especially. The problem is so bad Ford added a guard on some models, so that when, not if, the spring breaks, it can't also puncture the tire. I have seen many OE Toyotas with 200K+ on OE springs w/o any problems.

I only feel the vibration in the steering wheel and the passenger seat can shake a lot sometimes even the back seat on the passenger side i've noticed. I'm not concerned about the shake as much as when the car bottoms out cuz that could cut a tire and then there I am on the side of the road. I do know I need to buy a tire for the driver side so I'll have my shop take a look at them and see if he thinks they need to be rebalanced. I've went through him a lot for about 3 years now so I trust him pretty well. Thanks guys. Bryan
