First off... SHOW CAR. Form over function.

And what's wrong with big wings on Civics? Just because the majority of them do it for the looks doesnt mean that all big wings are not functional. I rock a wing when I go to the racetrack because with the way my suspension is setup (and the inherent light rear end of an FF) I need all the downforce I can get in the rear.

Ricahrd... I see you took my advice on the new wheels... Looks sick man.

Do what?

Postby JMSinMaryland » Thu May 11, 2006 5:40 am

Allen (Ufoz),
I normally agree with you about a lot of things but your logic about adding the wing is faulty. The only thing you're doing at the track is adding weight. For a wing to be functional it has to be built with aerodynamics in mind and not aesthetics. The rest of the body has to be aerodynamic leading the air towards the wing. Even if a wing does add downforce to an FF car you would have to acheive such a high state of speed to feel any affects. Jon.

Believe it or not, Camry's are actually very aerodynamic cars. 0.28 cD from the factory (compare that to 0.33cD for a stock BMW M3 and 0.30cD for a Porsche 993). I have a custom made front splitter who's purpose it is to create a low pressure zone of air underneath the front of my car, thereby creating a high pressure zone of air which flows over the car towards the rear (to the spoiler). The spoiler is an airfoil, not a straight piece of aluminum, so it guides air a little differently. And you dont neccesarily have to be hitting super high speeds to feel the effects. The rear of my car felt super stable pulling all the way from 2nd gear up through 4th on the track (never got any higher than that). As for adding weight... Considering how stripped down my car is when I track it, adding 8 pounds of carbon fiber to the back of the car is not going to hurt my performance very much. Plus, you have to remember that in an FF, ALL the weight is up front, engine, tranny, drive wheels, bigger brakes, bigger wheels and tires... Meanwhile the rear is empty. The fuel tank is in the middle of the car. The trunk is completely empty, and the carbon trunk reduces weight in the rear even further. To achieve better balance, adding back a little weight doesnt hurt (wing and relocating the battery to the trunk) as much as it would to roll without it and be prone to lots of oversteer, even with super sticky R compounds.
