THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME

i was putting my front friver wheel back on and 1 of the five thigns tht the lug goes on broke. i gues i over tightened it.

i know that thing is called a wheel hub. but do i need a new one? how long can i drive on 4/5 lugs? how much would it cost?
wat are my options?

its not safe to drive so borrow your mama's minivan for a few days until you get it replaced...

id only drive it to the shop to have replaced... NO WHERE ELSE
but thats just to be on the safe side

broke one in my old avalon. drove it to discount tire, $20 or so later it was fixed. no biggie. they thread a new one in. fairly common. Sap, i think there are threee or so Discount tires in Nape. good luck.

not big deal just dont brake hard. most of tire/brake service can replace it for 20-40 dollars. it is called wheel stud

Its fine to drive on, but you should get it fixed asap. The stud itself is only a couple dollars. Just to go a discount tire shop and have it replaced. Should not be more then $45 bucks.

Oh yea, get yourself a torque wrench . Good luck.

You're okay for awhile, but just go to Pep Boys or someplace that will be able to remove the broken lug bolt and replace it.

I've had tire shops over-torque during rotation and tire replacements before and they've had to reimburse me for getting it fixed elsewhere. It's something that happens all the time but don't freak. Just get it fixed and buy a torque wrench for future work!

I've helped my friends with this problem on their 240's before and it's not a very hard DIY.

1) Just go to NAPA or someplace and buy a new stud
2) Hammer the crap out of the broken one to get it to come out
3) Replace with the new stud
4) Tighten the new stud with a lug as hard as you can get it.

That's the process for a 240SX anyway, dunno if it's any different with a Solara.

^^^ It's a bit more involved, I think you have to take off the splash guard for the rotor. Really it' s a 30 minute job, if you have the right tools. If not, I would take it to your local shop to have it done. I think that it should be 20-40 dollars as stated before.

I'd think you might wanna drill the center of the broken stud and use an easy-out on it - or you will risk damaging the threads by just banging away at it inside.

You can run with as little as three lugs. You'll be just fine. I'd recommend going to a decent tire shop to get it done. I'm sure there's three dozen of them on Ogden Ave.

Heh. I have a 48oz Ball-peen that I use for banging them out. I call it the BFH . I just beat 'em out and have never run into trouble. Just be gentle with the new one's threads when you zip it in.

it really a bummer that i spent $8 on the stuff to paint my calipers but now i'm gonna spend $50 to get the stud fixed.

i drove quite a bit with the 4 on - the max speed was 65mph on the highway. i did avoid going to the city - bad roads!

anyways my calipers look awesome! i'll post pics some time in a week or 2. i'll probably get the stud fixed tomm.

I just broke one stud today. It only cost about $5 bux to get the stud but there gonna charge you on labor of at least an hour to replace.....you can drive on four but I would suggest getting it fixed.

yah, that apparently happend to my solara, but I didn't do it!!! I bought the car used in 2004, and I didn't think to check the lug nuts and all(cuz of the center caps). I saw it I think when I first worked on the front brakes. ANYHOO...I went to Pep Boys and bought a new stud and nut(like $5 combined). My dad drilled what was left of the old one out. Then, we put it in some of the way by hand and then the rest of the way by putting the lug nut on it and turning til it was in. Tool some muscle but it worked.

As for driving around on four I think its OK. The car never felt weird and the wheel never seemed loose. Probably not the best for the rotors and suspension, but as long as the other four are tightned right, don't see why it would be seriously bad for a little bit.
